Robert Hunter (born April 22, 1977 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is a former South African cyclist .

Athletic career

Robert Hunter was a professional from 1999 and began his career with the Italian cycling team Lampre . In 2003 he moved to the Dutch team at Rabobank . From 2005 he drove for the Swiss team Phonak and took part in the Tour de France for the fifth time with this team . Between 2007 and 2009 Hunter was under contract with the Professional Continental Team Barloworld and in 2007 he was the first ever rider from the African continent to win a stage for this team on the 11th stage of the Tour de France. In 2009 he also drove a stage in the Mediterranean Tour for this team. For the 2010 season he switched to the US team Garmin-Transitions . There he won two stages of the Vuelta a Murcia . After just one season he switched to the RadioShack team for which he drove a stage on the Tour of Austria . Also after only one year he moved back to the Garmin-Sharp team. In 2012 he became the South African champion in the individual time trial . In September 2013, he announced that he would end his career at the end of the season after failing to find a new employer.
