The sports association Police Hamburg from 1920 is a sports club from Hamburg . The club colors are green and white. The association has 3750 members (as of 2017). In the first half of the 1950s, the SV Polizei was the dominant handball club in Germany and won the German championship title several times, both in indoor handball and field handball .

history

The police sports field in the Schanzenpark used to be the scene of large football and field handball games.

The club was founded on May 28, 1920 as the sports department of the Hamburg Security Police . Already in September the name was changed to the Sports Association of the Ordnungspolizei , from which the association SpVg Polizei Hamburg became in the same year . Due to the separation of the Hamburg police into a state police and the protection police , the Hansa military sports club split off as an association of state police officers in July 1934 . The SpVg remained the association of protection police and was renamed Police SV Hamburg on September 7, 1935 . Just one year later, MSV Hansa rejoined Police SV. In 1938, as a result of the Greater Hamburg Act, not only the cities of Altona, Harburg-Wilhelmsburg, Wandsbek and Bergedorf were incorporated into Hamburg, but also the corresponding police sports clubs Police SV 1921 Harburg , Police SV 1924 Altona and Police SV 1924 Wandsbek . On January 16, 1942, the association was renamed again and was now known as SG OrPo Hamburg . In 1945 the association officially dissolved, but remained under the old name SpVg Polizei Hamburg . It was not officially re-established until June 3, 1946.

Handball

Greatest successes:
  • Handball :
    German runner-up:
    1948 (unofficial), 1954, 1955
    • German champion (field) :
      1941, 1943, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955
    German runner-up:
    1949, 1950

As early as 1941 and 1943, the police club had become German champions in field handball. After the war, two runners-up championships followed in 1949 and 1950 before three further championship titles were won in a row in 1951, 1952 and 1953. In 1955 the sixth and last large field championship was added. In the first half of the decade, the SV Police also dominated indoor handball - which at that time was of secondary importance compared to field games - and was German champions four times in a row from 1950 to 1953 . In 1954 and 1955 two runner-up championships followed, each of which was defeated in the final against Frisch Auf Göppingen . Subsequently, the SV Police could never again qualify for participation in a DM finals in the hall.

The club's heyday also ended on the large field in the second half of the 1950s. In 1956 the team failed in the quarter-finals at SG Leutershausen . In 1958, the team reached a final round of the German championship as the North German runner-up, but was eliminated in the first round at home against the subsequent German champions Hamborn 07 . The well-known police players included the attackers "Atom-Otto" Maychrzak and Jürgen Isberg , the goalkeepers Carl Boysen and Heinz Singer and the defender and later national coach for men and women, Werner Vick .

Since 1996, the club has been participating in games as part of SG Altona together with Union 03 and Hansa 10/11 .

successes

Soccer

The football department started in 1920 as a third-rate club. As early as 1921/22, the police footballers were second class and in 1922 they were already in the highest possible division, the Elbe District League. The typical advantages of police sports clubs at the time contributed to the rapid rise in Hamburg football. A comparatively good financial situation made it possible to have good equipment, well-tended sports fields and modern rooms. Since the members did not only practice the sport as an end in itself, but to be fit for the police service, it was comparatively easy for the players to get free for competitive games. After the close relegation in the relegation after the first year of the first class, the police officers increasingly established themselves in the top division. In 1927/28 she was able to achieve a draw against Hamburger SV for the first time . Since the SpVgg police were also dissatisfied with the fragmentation of the leagues in northern Germany, they joined the so-called football revolution under the leadership of Lothar Danner , with which ten top northern German clubs wanted to achieve a single-track northern German league. After all, the revolutionaries achieved partial success with the Hamburg Oberliga. In the first league season 1929/30, the SpVg achieved a first major success. In the league, they beat HSV 3-1 for the first time and ultimately qualified for the final round of the North German soccer championship. There, however, was in the first round, the round of 16, at the SpVg Hannover 97 through a 2-6 defeat over. After the disappointing exit, the police promptly withdrew from the House of Lords in 1931, but returned immediately in 1932. In 1933 the club was again in the final round of the North German championship, but retired from Group IV as fourth and last again prematurely.

Due to the recent success, the SpVg police became one of the ten first teams in the new Gauliga Nordmark , which was established in 1933 as the top division. The team was given preference over clubs like Victoria Hamburg or FC St. Pauli . The first season of 1933/34 the police finished in eighth place in the table. In addition to brilliant victories such as the 6: 0 against Union 03 or the 9: 1 against Schwerin FC 03 , there was also a clear 1: 7 defeat against the later league first Eimsbütteler TV . Among other things, by the 1: 1 at the police, the later second in the table Hamburger SV lost the missing point for the championship. The following season, the police footballers were able to finish in eighth place again. The highlight was a 6-2 win over FC 93 from Altona .

Due to the above-mentioned division of the association into the police SV for the protection police and the MSV Hansa for the order police, the police SV had to withdraw. The MSV Hansa took over the Gauligaplatz, but could not hold it. As bottom of the table with only three wins from 18 games, including a 2-1 against Altona 93, the club was relegated.

After the MSV Hansa returned to the police SV in 1936, they succeeded in 1937 with coach Walter Risse as the winner of the Hammonia district league and then won the group in the promotion round to Gauliga Nordmark. In the Gauliga, which now comprises twelve teams, the SV Police missed relegation by one point and was relegated as the penultimate. Only for Altona 93 there was again nothing to get against the police SV. This prevailed at home with 5: 2 and in Altona with 2: 1. For three years, the SV Police played second class. The first major success of this time was qualifying for the finals for the Tschammerpokal in 1939 . After a win in the first round at ASV Blumenthal , a 2:11 in the second round at Hamburger SV meant not only a debacle, but also the cup. Even the assault run through the Germania district league with 16 wins from 16 games in 1940/41 initially did not lead to a return to the Gauliga, as FC Kilia Kiel prevailed in the promotion round thanks to the better goal difference. The last return to the Gauliga was not made until 1942. This time the championship in the district league Germania was enough. Because the Gauliga Nordmark was divided into the leagues Hamburg, Mecklenburg and Schleswig-Holstein for the 1942/43 season. In the Hamburg Gauliga , which comprises ten clubs , the police officers now competing as SG OrPo finished in seventh place. A 4: 0 against the ailing old master Eimsbütteler TV was the most notable success. After the season, however, the police dissolved the football department and the club withdrew from the Gauliga.

In 1950/51 the re-established SpVg Polizei was second class again as a climber in the Hamburg amateur league. There the club met old Gauliga rivals such as SC Victoria, Union 03 and Wilhelmsburger SV. As the 14th of 16 clubs, the newcomer rose again at the end of the season, but returned to the Hamburg upper house for the 1952/53 season. The relegation in the season on a good sixth place (with balanced points account) meant the last great success. In 1953/54, the police footballers were relegated to the penultimate. For the Hamburg police , the success of the handball men in the club was clearly in the foreground.

After all, the club stayed in the third-class association league until 1960, to which the men's soccer team returned from 1961 to 1963. When they were again in the association league from 1966 to 1972, this was only fourth class due to the introduction of the Bundesliga . In 1972 Gert Dörfel's parent club dissolved the league and youth football department.

rugby

In the 1960s, the rugby department of the SpVg police was the only team that was able to dispute the Hamburg championship against FC St. Pauli : 1960, 1963, 1965 and 1966. After the eternal competitor moved up into the newly founded Bundesliga in 1971, that also succeeded SpVg police 1972 the rise. In the following year, however, the green-whites had to return to the regional league as bottom of the table. Two public rugby pitches on the edge of Hamburg's city park were used as venues : on Saarlandstrasse and on Jahnring ("Milchwirtschaft"). Today the rugby department no longer exists due to a lack of players.

American football

The SpVg Polizei is the parent club of the American football team Hamburg Amazons .

Water sports (rowing, canoeing, dragon boat)

The water sports department of the SpVg Police Hamburg, called WSAP Hamburg, has around 500 members and operates competitive sports and water hiking in the sports of canoeing , rowing and kite boating for all ages from 10 years. Rowing, which was already practiced in the 1930s, was reactivated in 1947 by the then police officer Rudi Rabe.

  • The sporting highlight of the water sports department was winning the bronze medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles by club member Iris Völkner in the " 2 series without ".
  • In canoe polo , the WSA police team won the German championship in 1928, 1929, 1970, 1971 and 1976.
  • In ocean rowing, four women from WSAP 2019/20 took part in the Atlantic Challenge . They came 17th out of 35 boats of different classes started and were the best women's boat. Under the name RowHHome, they were the first German team to cross the Atlantic: Catharina Streit , Meike Ramuschkat , Steffi Kluge and their daughter Timna Bicker (who still registered under the name Kluge , but got married before the start of the race). However, membership of the WSAP was hardly mentioned in the media (except for the NDR ).

There are also various fitness options.

The police athletes, of whom not only police officers and family members can become members, now have the following, partly club-owned facilities:

  • a grass pitch for soccer (and formerly field handball) with floodlights, 400 m track and clubhouse in the Sternschanzenpark
  • Gyms on Haubachstrasse in Altona-Nord for the boxing department and on Carl-Cohn-Strasse in Winterhude for the basketball department
