The Sandrain is a statistical district (17) of the district III ( Mattenhof-Weissenbühl ) in the south of Bern Bern . The statistical district borders in the east on the Kirchenfeld -Quartier, which can be reached via Schönausteg over the Aare . In the north it borders on the old town and in the west on the Weissenbühl -Quartier and the Monbijou . In the south is the municipal boundary to Wabern near Bern .
In 2019, 4176 inhabitants are given for the statistical district, of which 3260 are Swiss and 916 are foreigners.
The northern part is accessed by the Bernmobil line 30. The main traffic axes are the Marzilistrasse and the Sandrainstrasse . The two Aare bridges, which connect the quarter with the opposite bank, are called Dalmazibrücke and Schönausteg .
history
The quarter includes the Vannazhalde , the former marshland Marzilimoos with the arms of the Sulgenbach , the old bath pond on today's Weihergasse , the now also filled in Kleine Aare and the Marziliinsel (today Marzilibad ), the Lindenau as well as the terrace Schönau . The estuary of the Sulgenbach gave rise to businesses here as early as the 14th century. Switzerland's first outdoor swimming pool was built here in 1822 and Switzerland's first gasworks from 1841 to 1844. The area has been developed as a district since the late 1860s. The Dalmazi Bridge was built from 1871 to 1872 , which enabled the transition to Dalmazi (Kirchenfeld), and in 1885 the Marzilibahn , Europe's shortest public funicular railway, was opened, which made it easier to get to the city.
Culture and leisure
In Bern , the quarter is best known for the two youth centers Gaskessel and Dampfzentrale as well as for its beautiful promenade along the Aare . The Lichtspiel / Kinemathek Bern has been located next to the steam center since 2012 . The theater department of the Bern University of the Arts was previously located in Sandrain, where regular events under the "8nach8" series took place.
