Scharmien Zandi , [ ʃar̝ˈmiːn ] (* 1987 in Vienna , Austria ) is an Austrian-Kurdish artist , musician and performer . Her work includes performance , composition , installation and direction .

Life

Zandi, half Kurdish , half Austrian, was born in Vienna and grew up in Landskron near Villach in Carinthia . Through her mother, a classical singer, she came into contact with music and art at an early age and enjoyed local music and painting lessons. After graduating from school, she returned to Vienna to study performing arts and music , which she completed in 2012 and 2014. She also studied architecture and comparative literature, but never graduated from these subjects. She works as a freelance artist in the national and international space on contemporary stage works , sound design and film art .

Zandi made numerous trips, including to the USA , where he gave a concert rage-cage (homage to John Cage ) in West Village New York in 2013 at Caffe Vivaldi, and in 2014 he performed in Bogota for a month as a singer with the progressive rock band The South on. In Europe, she played concerts in Denmark , Italy , Germany , Greece , the Netherlands , Spain and Portugal , which gave rise to the Paloma Negra music project , which she launched in 2014 with guitarist Daniel Schneeberger.

In 2012 Zandi composed Maria Tybee , a piece referring to Maria Anna Mozart (the sister of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ) and the missing bomb Tybee , which was premiered in Villach. In 2015 she received funding from the city of Villach to implement her MiniMusic music project. Contemporary music is conveyed to children and young people using a specially developed method with music and composition pedagogical research. The resulting art projects will be performed.

In 2015 she performed as a singer at the Radio Kulturhaus in Vienna and acted in the music group Misthaufen . Her first exhibition 1 / 4life Crisis took place in Vienna in 2016. The following year, Zandi gave the performance Massacre. Love. : This is a juxtaposition of fascism and feminism theory that focuses on feminist pornography . The performance was presented at the WUK and served as the starting impulse for the dirty silence symposium in the Ateliertheater .

At the end of 2016 she met the guitarist Clemens Hackmack (Triptonus). With Max Mayer (drums n pads) and Timothy Luger (bass) they started the music project Cadû , where progressive rock , trip-hop and new music meet. In this formation she acts as the front woman. In 2019 they released their debut album Steelstreet and played as the opening act for Motorpsycho in the arena and toured with Tito & Tarantula . You are under contract with StoneFree Records.

In 2017 Zandi received a scholarship at the invitation of the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China and worked for six months as a conductor and composer with various choirs in Tianjin and Beijing . Together with Elke and Gerald Wirth , she developed a method for teaching music at Chinese music schools.

In addition to the concert at the Dust Dawn Club, where she performed her works composed in China, she worked with students from Peking University on her contemporary opera performance Dione , which was premiered at the Austrian Cultural Forum in Beijing.

In the Dashanzi Art District in Beijing Zandi presented two projects. As part of the 798 International Children's Art Festival , she presented the sound performance Taikonaut Lilli .

In 2018 she designed an audio installation with the chanson program Amour Fou , which was presented in the pop art exhibition Mortgaged Time in the Red Gate Gallery. At the Pfinxt'n Festival 2019 she played Amour Fou for the first time in Austria, where she a. a. shared the stage with Maria Bill , Paul Gulda , and Michael Köhlmeier . In 2020 Amour Fou was awarded the Austrian Music Theater Prize in the Off Theater Prize category.

Because of the corona pandemic, Zandi had to cancel her first American tour. She was therefore invited by the Austrian Cultural Forum New York to create a unique online show that can be understood as a simulacrum of her previous works of art. With the poetic radio play 'Die Weisse Weste' by her band CADÛ , the video installation State of Matter from her opera Dione and a concert excerpt from her avant-garde chanson program Amour fou , in which she is accompanied by the Austrian Lukas Gabric , who lives in New York, on the saxophone. With the title A Taste of Amour Fou, she focuses on change, connection and trust, a snapshot of current events, which will premiere on May 15, 2020.
