History and description

The Söhrewald transmission tower is a former basic network transmitter for television. It is located between the communities of Wellerode and Eschenstruth, southeast of Kassel. It is a 148 meter high type tower that was built between 1962 and 1963. It belongs to the rare type D, of which only five copies were built. The upper part of the tower was demolished in 2006.

Until 1986, the programs ZDF and Hessen 3 were broadcast from here to supply North Hesse. After the construction of the Habichtswald telecommunications tower and the activation of both programs on the Hohe Meißner , these frequencies were superfluous, so that they were passed on to the private broadcasters RTL Television and Sat.1 . The Söhrewald station was no longer operated after the broadcasting was switched from analog to the DVB-T system. With the introduction of DVB-T2 HD for terrestrial broadcasting of television programs, the location was reactivated to supply the Kassel area close to the city.

Frequencies and Programs

Digital television (DVB-T2)

Regular operation of DVB-T2 HD in Northern Hesse began on November 8, 2017. The programs of ARD ( hr -Mux), ZDF and the commercial offer from freenet TV ( encoded in Irdeto ) are broadcast in HEVC video coding and in full HD resolution. The DVB-T2 HD -Ausstrahlungen from the transmitter Kassel-Söhrewald are simulcast (Single Frequency Network) with other transmitter sites.

All channels shown in italics are encrypted and can only be received via the DVB-T2 HD platform freenet TV .
