Sergeant Major
The Hauptfeldwebel is a rank of the Bundeswehr . The sergeant major was a service position in earlier German armed forces .

The rank of Sergeant Major is determined by the Federal President with the order of the Federal President on the rank designations and the uniform of the soldiers on the basis of the Soldiers Act .
Authority to command and positions
In the Bundeswehr is the first sergeant, a corporal rank , which in accordance with the Central Service Regulation (ZDv) 14/5 "military law" for the rank group of officers with sword knot counts. Because they belong to the rank group of NCOs with portepee, Sergeants can issue orders within the limits set there to soldiers of the rank groups of teams and NCOs without portepee on the basis of § 4 ("Superiors relationship based on rank") of the Superiors Ordinance.
Sergeants are employed, for example, as company sergeants , platoons , company troop leaders , deputy platoons and in staffs . Due to the position in the service, Sergeants can issue orders to all service or technical subordinate soldiers in the cases listed in the Supervisor Ordinance.
Appointment and remuneration
The decisive legal basis for the appointment as Sergeant Major is set out in the Soldiers' Career Ordinance (SLV) and, in addition, the Central Service Regulations (ZDv) 20/7. To rank Sergeant professional soldiers, regular soldiers and can ordered reservists are appointed. A requirement for appointment to the rank of sergeant major is belonging to one of the career paths of sergeants. Employment with the rank of sergeant major is possible if the applicant has usable knowledge in the application. Most of the Sergeant Major had previously served as a Sergeant Major . history
In the second order of the Federal President on the uniform of soldiers from July 26, 1957, two years after the establishment of the Bundeswehr , the rank of Sergeant Major was newly created.
Equivalent, subordinate and superior ranks
Only Army and Air Force uniform wearers hold the rank of Sergeant Major . Navy uniform bearers of the same rank hold the rank of captain . Officer candidates hold the rank of senior ensign (for army and air force uniforms) or senior ensign at sea (for naval uniforms). In the NATO armed forces, the Sergeant Major is equivalent to all ranks with the NATO rank code OR-7 and OR-8.
In the sergeant's careers , the main sergeant according to No. 127 f. ZDv 20/7 classified between the lower-ranking Oberfeldwebel or Oberbootsmann and the higher-ranking staff sergeant or staff boatman (first rank designation for Army and Air Force uniform wearers; second rank designation for naval uniforms).

Wehrmacht
The main sergeant of the Wehrmacht was introduced in 1938 and was not a rank (in contrast to the Bundeswehr), but the service designation for the company sergeant , also "Spieß" or "mother of the company". This replaced the previous designation "Oberfeldwebel der Truppe" and was usually a senior Portepee sergeant in the rank of Sergeant (OR-6) or Oberfeldwebel (OR-7). Status symbols were two parallel sewn on, 10 mm wide, silver-colored non-commissioned officer braids, the "spit piston rings" or "spit braids" on both cuffs on the uniform jacket, parade skirt and uniform coat. During the war there was also the title of "Hauptfeldwebel-Diensttuer". In exceptional cases, sergeants (comparable to today's staff sergeant OR-5) were also used for this purpose.
Armed SS
In the Waffen-SS , the SS-Stabsscharführer was comparable to the spit in the army and air force, in the sense of a company sergeant .

Order police
Equivalent to the "Hauptfeldwebel" (spear) of the Wehrmacht was the executive sergeant in closed police formations (e.g. training battalions, police hundreds). Since 1939 , two "piston rings" made of silver-colored sergeants' braid, similar to the sergeant major of the Wehrmacht , functioned as a status symbol for the spear above both cuffs . The provision was extended to the main sergeant's service door in 1940 .
National Peoples Army
In the National People's Army of the GDR, too , the sergeant major was not a rank as in the Bundeswehr, but the designation of the prominent position or use for sergeant ranks, which corresponds to the company sergeant in the Bundeswehr . For this purpose, professional sergeants in the rank of sergeant - major (OR- 8) or sergeant-major (OR-7) were used. The functional insignia were two 10 mm wide, parallel silver NCO braids, the "spit piston rings" above both cuffs on the service jacket, pardon jacket and uniform coat. With the introduction of the rank group of ensigns, they could also be used in this position.
Other forces
The equivalent to the rank of sergeant major was in a number of armed forces of the former Warsaw Pact the rank of Starschi serzhant (German: Oberfeldwebel). In the NATO armed forces , the German senior sergeant major is classified as NATO rank code OR-7 and OR-8.
