history

Shadow of Intent was founded in 2014 by the two musicians Chris Wiseman and Ben Duerr as an internet band. By the time it was founded, Duerr had already written Halo- inspired lyrics, while Wiseman had composed various songs. In the middle of the year it was founded, the EP Inferi Sententia was released with five titles, produced in-house and only published on digital level.

All five tracks were re-recorded on the debut album Primordial, which was released in January 2016 . As a guest musician in the play The Cosmic Inquisitor 's Enterprise Earth -Frontsänger Dan Watson heard. In March 2017, the second album Reclaimer was announced for a release later that year. In addition, with Federico Zuccarelli, Keith Kohlhepp and Matt Kohanowski, a guitarist , a bassist and a drummer were firmly integrated into the band. Vildhjarta guitarist Buster Odeholm and Abigail Williams session musician Kelsie Hargita were involved in the creation process of the album, which was released in April 2017 . Guest musicians include ingested singer Jason Evans, Dickie Allen from Infant Annihilator and Abiotic , Aleksandr Shikolai from Slaughter to Prevail and the former Lorna Shore singer Tom Barber . Within the first week of sales, 500 copies of the album were sold as phonograms. Reclaimer received 72 votes for Metal Injection's album of the year 2017, 0.33 percent of all the votes of the online portal's readers.

On December 1st, 2017, the band played their very first concert at Webster Underground in Hartford , Connecticut . In January 2018 the band, along with groups like Dying Fetus , Kamelot and Morbid Angel, were confirmed for the New England Metal and Hardcore Fest at the Palladium in Worcester , before Shadow of Intent made their first concert tour through several between April 13 and 24 states in the United States as an opener for Carnifex , Oceano and Winds of Plague completed. From June 8 to July 13, 2018, the second North American tour will follow as the opener for The Black Dahlia Murder and Whitechapel . The concert tour is also accompanied by Aversions Crown and Fleshgod Apocalypse .

On April 6, 2018, the band released a new song called Underneath a Sullen Moon . In November and December of the same year the band completed their first co-headlining tour through the United States together with Spite . In December 2018, the band announced the departure of drummer Matt Kohanowski and bassist Keith Kohlhepp, who have since been replaced by Anthony Barone on drums and Andrew Monias on bass guitar. In mid-June 2019, the band announced their third album, Melancholy , for August 16 of the same year. Trevor Strnad from The Black Dahlia Murder can be heard as a guest musician . Within the first week of its release, the album sold around 1,700 copies in the United States.

In September and October 2019, the group will tour together with Despised Icon , Ingested and Kublai Khan through the United States and Canada, with the tour being supported on various dates by acts such as Angelmaker , Suffocation , Devourment and I Declare War . The group was supposed to play at the Summer Breeze for the first time in August 2020 , but the festival was canceled by the organizer in mid-April 2020 after the Bavarian state government issued a general ban on major events until August 31 in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic .

style

Shadow of Intent plays a melodic variant of Deathcore with borrowings from Melodic Death Metal , which is comparable to Cattle Decapitation , The Black Dahlia Murder and Make Them Suffer . The song The Forsaken Effigy even recognizes vibes of 1990s hip-hop and nu-metal . The music is described as "a bastard of slamming brutality and technical lethality". The symphonic inserts are reminiscent of genre colleagues like Fleshgod Apocalypse or Make Them Suffer. The interplay of Wiseman and Kohanowski creates brutal snapshots that are reminiscent of Behemoth in their black metal days. The music of Shadow of Intent also reminds of the symphonic Blackened Technical Deathcore invented by Lorna Shore .

Ben Duerr's screaming song is influenced by musicians like Phil Bozeman from Whitechapel , Shagrath from Dimmu Borgir , Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth and Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation, while Wiseman's instrumental playing influences influences from As Blood Runs Black , The Black Dahlia Murder, Dream Theater , Septicflesh , Within the Ruins and Ovid's Withering . Influences Behemoth and Job for a Cowboy are also recognized. The clear vocals are taken over by Chris Wiseman.

The lyrics, which are mainly written by Ben Duerr, deal exclusively with the events of the Halo computer game series . Because of this, the term Halocore established itself in the deathcore scene . In April 2018 published piece Underneath a Sullen Moon , singer Ben Duerr processed a failed suicide attempt and processed the question of what would have happened if the suicide had been successful.

Chris Wiseman is a musician in the American metalcore band Currents . Ben Duerr also plays in the groups Desponents , Hollow Prophet and In Depths and Tides .

Former drummer Matt Kohanowski played in the deathcore band Dealey Plaza and is currently the drummer for Oceano . Former bassist Keith Kohlhepp was part of the metal band Proletariat and Federico Zuccarelli was a former member of Construct Paradise .

Band name

Shadow of Intent is the name of a cargo ship from the Halo series. The musicians chose this name due to the fact that the lyrics revolve around the game series and they are big fans of the game series themselves.
