Syarhey Waljanzinawitsch Nowikau ( Belarusian Сяргей Валянцінавіч Новікаў , Russian Сергей Валентинович Новиков / Sergei Valentinovich Novikov * 27. April 1979 in Chavusy , Mogilev Region , Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic , USSR ) is a former Belarusian biathlete .
Sjarhej Nowikau is a student and lives in Mahiljou , he has been practicing biathlon since 1990. He is trained by Anatoli Perepetschkin. The athlete, who starts for Dinamo Minsk, has been part of the Belarusian national team since 2001. Novikov made his international debut without notable success at the 1999 Junior World Championships in Pokljuka . Then he was used for the first time in the European Cup and won his first race, an individual, in Champex-Lac and then came second in the sprint. In 2000 he started in the relay race of the European Championships in Zakopane and finished sixth there. In the summer of the year he took part again in the relay at the world championships in summer biathlon in Khanty-Mansiysk and took seventh place.
At the beginning of the 2000/01 season, Novikov made his debut in the Biathlon World Cup . In an individual in Hochfilzen he was 76. He achieved his first notable result in 2003 as fourth with the relay in Ruhpolding . Shortly afterwards he finished 14th in the Lahti sprint for the first time in the points. In the summer of the year he started again at the world championships in summer biathlon in Forni Avoltri . With the season, Novikov narrowly missed a medal in fourth. He finished seventh in the mass start. 2005 was a good year for Novikov. In the World Cup he achieved several acceptable placements in the points, at the European Championships in Novosibirsk he was fifth with the relay, at the World Championships in Hochfilzen fourth with the relay and at the World Championships in summer biathlon, he finally won the relay bronze (with Rustam Waliullin , Aljaksandr Syman and Aljaksandr Uszinau ) in Muonio .
In the 2005/06 season he achieved several good World Cup placements, about a twelfth place in pursuit in Osrblie , a tenth place in the pursuit of Antholz, but above all in relay races. In Turin , Novikov was first used in 2006 at the Olympic Games . He started in all races except the mass start and achieved a 24th place in the individual as the best result. At the subsequent European Championships in Langdorf he was European champion in the pursuit and with Waliullin, Uladsimer Dratschou and Oleg Ryschenkow in the relay, he also won silver behind Jaroslav Soukup in the sprint and was fourth in the individual. In 2007 he competed in all races of the world championship except in the mass start, the best result was a 13th place with the mixed relay.
Sjarhej Nowikau celebrated his greatest sporting success at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . After an error-free shooting performance, he finished 2nd in the individual race over 20 km, together with Ole Einar Bjørndalen . This is also Nowikau's best place in the World Cup so far.
