Princess Sophie Eleonore of Saxony (born November 23, 1609 in Dresden ; † June 2, 1671 Darmstadt ) from the Albertine line of the House of Wettin was by marriage Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt .

Life

Sophie Eleonore was the eldest child of the Saxon Elector Johann Georg I (1585–1656) from his second marriage to Princess Magdalena Sibylle of Prussia (1586–1659), daughter of Duke Albrecht Friedrich of Prussia .

Their marriage in the middle of the Thirty Years War on April 1, 1627 at Hartenfels Castle in Torgau with Landgrave Georg II of Hesse-Darmstadt (1605–1661) was celebrated lavishly as a political-dynastic event despite the difficult times. On the occasion of the wedding, the first German opera “Tragicomoedia von der Dafne” by Heinrich Schütz was premiered. As a result, the custom prevailed in Europe to musically enrich festivities in princely circles.

Due to his marriage to Sophie Eleonore, who made him the son-in-law of the Saxon Elector, Georg succeeded in getting King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden to recognize the neutrality of Hesse-Darmstadt in the Thirty Years War.

The Hessian University and State Library in Darmstadt owes a significant increase in the collection to Sophie Eleonore, including the Thesaurus Picturarum of the Palatinate Church Council Markus zum Lamm (1544–1606).
