Handball

history

The most successful time of the Versmold handball players began in the 1980s under the direction of the trainer and manager Willi Möhle, who once played for TuS Nettelstedt in the Bundesliga . After promotion to the Oberliga Westfalen in 1985, the first men's team was promoted to the Regionalliga West three years later . In the 1989/90 DHB Cup season , the Versmolders caused a sensation when they reached the round of 16 via SuS Oberaden and VfL Bad Schwartau, where they lost 19:22 to the Bundesliga club THW Kiel . The promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was missed in the regional league season 1989/90 , when the Versmolder were subject to the TV Aldekerk in the final . In the following season , TV Emsdetten was ahead in the finals . After all, after winning the final over TSG Altenhagen-Heepen from Bielefeld , the Versmold were able to celebrate promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1992 .

The Spvg was assigned to the center group. With two points behind a non-relegation place, relegation was missed as third from bottom. The club then tried with great financial effort to create the immediate resurgence. Insiders knew that Versmold could pay Bundesliga salaries. With Bernhard Woite and Dirk Kelle , two Bundesliga players were signed. The Versmold reached the final of the West German Championship in the 1993/94 regional league season and met TSG Herdecke there . After a 14:15 defeat in Herdecke, the second leg in Versmold ended in a 21:21 draw, so that only one goal was missing from the direct promotion. In the following cup season 1994/95 the THW Kiel made a guest appearance in the second cup round in Versmold and won with 22:16. Previously, Spvg beat SV Concordia Staßfurt away with 21:18.

Again, the club signed two Bundesliga players, Holger Menke and Oliver Bratzke , before the handball in Versmold GmbH , which handles the game , got into financial difficulties and finally had to file for bankruptcy. According to the managing director, "announced revenue that is classified as certain has not flowed as promised". The players received no money for months and were repeatedly put off by the board. When Dirk Kelle suffered a nasal bone fracture in January 1995 and had to undergo an operation, he found that he had no health insurance at all . The bankruptcy also had an impact on the players who had to pay taxes over the years . Nevertheless, the team played for a long time to get promoted and missed the final for promotion one point behind Wuppertaler SV .

In the 1995/96 cup season , the Versmolders reached the third round via the stations SG Wilhelmsburg and TSV 1860 Stralsund , where the team clearly lost to Bundesliga club TV Niederwürzbach at 17:32. At the end of the 1996/97 season, the team, temporarily trading as HSV Versmold , rose from the regional league after losing playoffs against TuS Spenge . After the 2016/17 season, the first men's team was relegated to the district league. The home venue is the Sparkassen-Arena Versmold , which opened in February 2011 and which SpVg shares with local rivals Sportfreunde Loxten , Spvg Hesselteich and HSG Bockhorst-Dissen .

history

After many years at the district level, the sporting upswing began in the mid-1970s. In 1976, the Versmold were first district champions and in 1979 rose to the Landesliga Westfalen . In 1982 and 1985, the team was third before the Versmolder were transferred from season 1 to season 5. In 1986 the team was on the verge of promotion to the Westphalia Association for the first time . The Spvg ended the season tied with SC Neheim . However , Neheim won the play-off in neutral Lippstadt 2-1. Two more runner-up championships followed behind VfR Sölde and Rot-Weiß Unna . A third chance to rise to the league emerged in 1995, but the Spvg lost to ex-professional Christian Knehans in the relay championship against Davaria Davensberg 2: 3. Almost 2,000 spectators followed the game in Warendorf on Whit Monday , in which the Versmolders also scored an own goal . Curiously, both teams had celebrated the end of the season together on Mallorca the weekend before . The sporting decline began in the late 1990s.

In 1998 the team was relegated to the district league and two years later had to accept relegation to the district league A. Meanwhile slipped into the district league B, the footballers have been playing in the district league A since they were promoted in 2008. There, the Versmolders were runner-up in 2015 and 2016 behind SC Hicret Bielefeld and SV Häger . It was not until 2020 that he was promoted to the district league again. The home ground of the footballers is the Kurt-Nagel-Parkstadion , which opened in 1950 . The namesake Kurt Nagel founded the local haulage company Kraftverkehr Nagel together with his brother Rudolf in 1935 .
