Wind & Wuthering (English for about: " Wind and Storm ") is the eighth studio album by the British rock band Genesis . It was first released in the UK in December 1976 and was the last studio album with guitarist Steve Hackett . It is considered the last work of the progressive rock phase of Genesis. After Wind & Wuthering and the live album Seconds Out , the band largely changed their musical style towards rock and pop music .
background
Wind & Wuthering is the first Genesis album that was not recorded in their native England. Instead, the Hilvaria (Relight) Studios in Holland were booked for three weeks, where the follow-up album was made. In the making of the songs there were more and more disagreements, primarily between Tony Banks and Steve Hackett, which is why the latter finally left the band in 1977.
The cover of the album shows an autumn tree surrounded by clouds of fog. The title of the album is based on the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë ; Unquiet slumbers for the sleepers in that quiet earth is the last movement of the novel and forms the title of two connected instrument pieces on the album.
The ballad Afterglow became a live classic for the band.

Description of individual songs
- Eleventh Earl of Mar : The song is about the 11th " Earl of Mar " John Erskine . It is about the 1st Jacobite Rising in 1715 in the Scottish Highlands. The text is written from the perspective of a child whose father is telling the story. In between, the child urges the father to finally tell the story further. The first line of text of the song (" The sun had been up for a couple of hours, covered the ground with a layer of gold ") is also the beginning of the novella The Flight of the Heron by DK Broster.
- Wot Gorilla? : This instrumental piece, composed by Banks and Collins, is shaped by Collins' inclination towards jazz rock, while Banks draws his influence from classical music into it.
- Blood on the Rooftops : The text written by Hackett can be interpreted as a comparison of gray reality with the harmonious world of American cinema.
- Afterglow : The end piece Afterglow , which Tony Banks wrote intuitively, was written about as quickly as it takes to play the title, he said. The song was often played in Genesis concerts.
tour
The group toured between January and July 1977, recording their second live album Seconds Out . With this tour began the longstanding collaboration with the drummer Chester Thompson .

Trivia
Tony Banks stated in an interview that he would count Wind & Wuthering among the two best Genesis albums.
Spot the pigeon
The EP Spot the Pigeon (GB # 14) was released on May 20, 1977 and contains three pieces that were recorded as part of Wind & Wuthering's recordings , which (with the exception of Inside & Out ) stand out lyrically and musically from the atmosphere of the album. For example, Pigeons deals with a pigeon plague in Trafalgar Square , and Match of the Day deals satirically with football .
- Match of the Day (Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford) - 3:23
- Pigeons (Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford) - 3:10
- Inside & Out (Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, Mike Rutherford) - 6:42
