architecture

Exterior construction

The square bell tower, which goes back to the previous Romanesque building, adjoins the nave in the west and forms the northern end of the west facade. The tower is broken through on three sides on the bell floor by triple- coupled sound arcades . The high pointed helmet comes from later times. The crypt or baptistery, which is covered by a pent roof, is built on the north side of the tower , and the entrance to the church is integrated in a sign next to it. The entire west side of the church is wood shingled .

The church is a hall building with a strongly drawn-in, three-sided closed choir . The wide nave with a flat ceiling and stitch caps in the high cove is structured by flat pilasters with Ionic capitals and high entablature pieces.

The square in plan Choir is of a flat Pendentif dome arched. The western end of the nave is formed by a double gallery , the depth of which is significantly reduced in its northern half by the installed tower. The organ is built into the upper gallery . The rectangular crypt or baptistery is covered by a barrel cap.

Stucco decor, ceiling and gallery paintings

Stucco ceiling of the crypt chapel

The heavy stucco decor of the crypt chapel was created in the course of the new baroque building of the church around 1680. He is attributed to Caspar Feichtmayr , one of the co-founders of the Wessobrunn School.

The ceiling frescoes in the choir and nave are surrounded by a painted stucco imitation and date from the time the church was redesigned in 1778/79, as can be seen from the chronogram above the choir arch . They were carried out by Franz Xaver Bernhard from Eggenthal .

The dome fresco in the choir shows a depiction of the Last Supper above an attic in illusionistic architectural painting . The four evangelists are depicted on the spandrels in grisaille painting . The ceiling fresco of the nave shows the defense speech of St. Stephen in front of an architectural prospectus. The painting bears the signature: "Franc Xaveri Bernhard de Eggenthall pinxit 1778" (Franz Xaver Bernhard from Eggenthal painted it in 1778). The scenes from the life of the patron saint in the spandrels are executed as grisaille like the pictures of the gallery balustrades.

In the center of the altar you can see the figure of St. Stephen kneeling in front of the high priest , which dates from around 1680/81 and is attributed to Johann Pöllandt . The other sculptures were made by Anton Sturm from Füssen and depict Mary as intercessor in the altar extract and the apostles Peter and Paul to the side.
  • To the side of the high altar are the sculptures of the Augsburg diocese patrons, Saint Ulrich and Saint Afra , also works by Anton Sturm from around 1730.
  • On the choir stalls from the years 1730/31 by Paul Pfeiffer small figures of the church fathers are placed at about the same time , on the left Pope Gregory the Great with tiara, Pope's cross and dove in his hand and St. Augustine with the bishop's staff and the flaming heart , on the right side St. Jerome and St. Ambrose .
  • Like the high altar, the side altars were created by Paul Pfeiffer and Anton Sturm. The northern altar from 1736 is decorated with sculptures of Immaculata , the plague saints Rochus and Sebastian and in the extract with the figure of St. Florian , the southern with the sculptures of Saint Joseph , Saint Barbara and St. Agatha , and in the extract mt the figure of Saint Isidore .
