The District 5 is one of ten districts of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Dusseldorf . It includes the northern districts of Stockum , Lohausen , Kaiserswerth , Wittlaer , Angermund and Kalkum . The form of the city districts to structure the city of Düsseldorf was introduced in 1975. The seat of the district administration is on the Kaiserswerther market in Kaiserswerth. The northern border of the city district also represents the Düsseldorf city border to the city of Duisburg .
In contrast to other major cities in North Rhine-Westphalia such as Cologne or Duisburg, the city districts in Düsseldorf do not have proper names , but are only designated with a number.
description
District 5 is the largest of the ten districts in terms of area and covers a good quarter of the entire urban area of the state capital. The city district is characterized by strong contrasts. In the south of the area are the Düsseldorf airport , the exhibition grounds and the multifunctional arena ; the north, on the other hand, is predominantly characterized by agriculture, forests and suburban development in the districts of Wittlaer, Angermund and Kalkum. The parts of Stockum not taken up by the trade fair are predominantly dignified residential areas, mostly with villa developments from the 1930s. Lohausen, on the other hand, is still characterized by a village, as no major development of the district was possible due to its proximity to the airport. Finally, Kaiserswerth, with its medieval core, offers the image of a cozy small town and forms the center of the entire city district in every respect. The district representation and the district administration are located in the former town hall of Kaiserswerth . The branch of the Düsseldorf city libraries responsible for the north of Düsseldorf is also located in Kaiserswerth .
Despite the large distances to the city center by Düsseldorf standards and the nuisance caused by the airport, the entire city district is a very popular residential area. Both rents and land values are among the highest in the city. Except in Kaiserswerth and z. T. Stockum, where there are also multi-family houses on a large scale, predominates the development with single and two-family houses.
There are traffic connections to Düsseldorf city center and to Duisburg via the B 8 , the B 8n expressway and the U79 light rail line . In Angermund there is an S-Bahn stop on line S1 .
history
Kaiserswerth is one of the oldest settlements in Düsseldorf's urban area and has a rich history as an independent city. Kalkum has the earliest documentary mention in the city of Düsseldorf. The corresponding text comes from the year 892 (Calechheim) . Lohausen is first mentioned in a document in 1047 (Lohuson) , Wittlaer in 1144 (Wizelare) and Angermund in 1188 (Angermunt) . These were country estates and mansions of the nobility. As a result, smaller settlements developed. Essentially, the entire area, with the exception of Kaiserswerth, remained agricultural until modern times. → See also: History of Kaiserswerth
In 1929 Kaiserswerth and Lohausen were incorporated. The flight operations of the Lohauser airfield began in 1927, the airport was founded in 1929. In 1937, the North Park and the adjoining National Socialist model settlements were built as part of the Reich Exhibition of Creative People . In 1971 the new exhibition center in Stockum opened. In 1975 the villa suburbs Wittlaer, Kalkum and Angermund were finally incorporated. Around the turn of the century, the Rheinstadion was demolished in 1972 and a new multifunctional arena (now ESPRIT arena ) with a roof opening was built.
