Stubbe und der Pferdestecher is a German television film by Christa Mühl from 1996. It is the fifth film in the ZDF crime film series Stubbe - Von Fall zu Fall with Wolfgang Stumph in the title role.

action

In front of the Hamburg harbor hospital, a seriously injured man is pushed out of a car late at night and dies there after a short time. Commissioner Stubbe is assigned the case, which he has to take on alone because his colleague Zimmermann is at a conference. He asks his supervisor to be allowed to include commissioner candidate Klowe. At first, the identity of the deceased is unclear. Stubbe recognizes from the victim's clothing that he was likely to have been a cyclist, possibly been traveling as a camper and was involved in a car accident. The investigations lead to a village in the Hamburg hinterland, where a horse killer is currently causing unrest, who has been up to mischief all over northern Germany for some time. Kay Klowe contacts the investigating commissioner Stadler, as there could be a connection to the Hamburg deceased. Klowe actually finds evidence that the camper had been in the horse village, but the residents remain silent. In order to discover their secret, Stubbe wants to stay undercover with the resident tournament rider Heidi Hopp. However, Stubbe's wife Caroline and his daughter Christiane also want to spend a few days here at the stud and travel after Wilfried. He is slightly annoyed when he is introduced to the two of them and is not allowed to let anything appear so as not to endanger his covert mission. On his first ride, he passes Jan Franke's farm, which he finds conspicuous. Stubbe feigns health problems in order to take a break at the court and take a closer look at the man.

Klowe and Inspector Stadler manage to discover the camper's bike in the village pond and there is also an ID in the saddlebags, so that the victim now also has a name. However, the investigators still have no trace of the perpetrator. That changes when, late at night, the villagers hunted the alleged horse stabber, which apparently struck again and drove horses from a paddock onto the street. The mob is Jan Franke and in the whole mess, Stubbe realizes how the camper might have died. The way Franke was being persecuted recently, the camper was likely to have been mistaken for the horse stabber. Paint residue on the clothing of the victim of a red motorcycle lead to Uwe Ahlen, the mayor's son. He now has to answer for the death of the camper, but the horse killer has not yet been found for the village. This now apparently strikes again and kills Hopp's best competition horse, which had meanwhile been housed in the stable for his safety. It is thus possible to find an indication that actually refers to Jan Franke. But Stubbe is not sure, because he knows, based on his research in the village, that Franke has a secret relationship with the veterinarian's wife and that the horse was highly insured. Veterinarian Schmude would therefore have a motive to blame his rival. During a search of the stud and Schude's car, the instrument actually found. Stubbe confronts Schmude and Heidrun Hopp and it becomes clear that both had planned the deed for a long time in order to pass it on to the horse ripper (who was never in their village) and to receive the high insurance for the horse. For Hopp the animal was a bad investment because it never achieved the desired performance at tournaments. He was also not usable as a breeding stallion because he had become sterile due to excessive cortisone treatment by the veterinarian.

For the critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm , Stubbe und der Pferdestecher was a “nice provincial farce in 'Karniggels' style”, and they gave the fifth Stubbe case an average rating by pointing with their thumbs to the side.
