Télévision numérique terrestre

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TNT (Télévision Numérique Terrestre) is the name for digital terrestrial television in France ( DVB-T ). Launched in 2004 by eight public and private broadcasters, it was launched on March 31, 2005 in many regions of France and at that time reached 35% of the population. After the end of the network expansion, TNT now reaches over 88% of the population and at the end of 2009 had a market share of 20% compared to other reception methods. As a result, it was decided to switch off analogue aerial television on November 30, 2011.

TNT's offering currently comprises 18 free-to-air channels (including France's “big” channels TF1 , France 2 , France 3 and M6 ), ten pay TV channels and regional channels , with varying numbers depending on the region.

development

Since November 2008, Arte has also been broadcasting its program in HDTV format via TNT.

Since mid-2009, the 18 TNT channels and the four HD TNT channels have also been broadcast via the Atlantic Bird 3 satellite (Eutelsat, 5 ° West). This should also enable residents without TNT coverage via DVB-S to receive the free programs in digital quality. The satellite program package of the TNT programs is called Fransat . The programs are broadcast in coded form. A pack of Fransat , which is available in stores, is required for receipt . It consists of a digital satellite receiver with a 'VIACCESS' card module and the free Fransat decoder card, which is valid for life. The card is currently only available as part of the pack (as of October 2009).

As an alternative to Fransat, a similar package can be received via Astra 19 ° East. It uses the same type of decoder and Viaccess card, but under the name TNT SAT . This is important a) for locations without a view of Atlantic Bird 3, and b) useful for German immigrants in France who can also receive German-language free TV channels with the TNTSAT decoder using an additional channel search.

In February 2013, the French broadcasting supervisory authority CSA issued a recommendation to switch terrestrial broadcasting to DVB-T2 from 2020 . According to the recommendation, the previously used MPEG-2 codec should first be changed to MPEG-4 / AVC (H.264) and the more modern H.265 / HEVC codec should also be used at a later date.
