Charlotte Buchmeyer and her husband Markus, who is a client advisor at a private bank, live in affluent circumstances. Charlotte has organized a surprise birthday party for her husband, who comes home noticeably stressed out. While Markus' friends party and he tries to appear relaxed in front of his friends, he whispers to his wife that he has a woman's body in the trunk. He protests that he has nothing to do with the death of the woman, a customer of his bank, that he had an appointment with her to collect DM 280,000 for cash payment and, at her request, took her dog for a walk when he returned the woman dead and the money gone. He only put the body in the trunk for fear of not being able to explain the situation to the police, his wife tries to persuade him to go to the police after all, but he can convince her to help him with the corpse in the Rhine to sink. The next morning, Markus buries the dead woman's handbag in the garden, not noticing that his wife is secretly watching him. Charlotte drives into the dead man's apartment, in addition to the signs of burglary, she also discovers photos and letters that prove that Markus had a relationship with the dead woman, Dietrich Hefermehl, who introduces himself as a friend of the house, follows Charlotte into the apartment and puts her on hold Say, she pretends to be a friend of the dead and leaves without giving her name. While Rhine boatmen find the drifting corpse, Charlotte confronts her husband, he asserts that the relationship was not sexual in nature and that because of her debts he agreed to spend time with the lonely woman, the DM 280,000 for both of them .

In forensic medicine, Odenthal and Kopper learn that the woman was hit with a blunt object, but the cause of death was a broken neck. While Charlotte and Markus discuss their alibi and destroy the photos and letters, Odenthal and Kopper can use a missing person report to clarify the identity of the dead, it is about the extremely wealthy publishing director Dorothee Reinicke, the officials learn from the notary that they have DM 280,000 in the apartment must have had. While Charlotte tells Markus about her encounter with yeast flour, Odenthal goes to see him, but he does not mention the encounter. Odenthal is able to track down a witness who saw the dead dog, she tells us that at the lake, where the dog has been roaming around since the death of its mistress, she has often seen the corpulent owner with a male companion, she gives a description after which a phantom image of Markus can be created. The next day, Markus sees the phantom picture in the newspaper and gets nervous, at that moment Odenthal turns up at his place, who found out that the dead woman was a customer of his bank, and she summons him because of the phantom picture. Odenthal learns from Markus' secretary Anne Berger that she too had a relationship with him. Markus tells Odenthal and Kopper that their relationship was purely professional, he denies any private contact and he doesn't want to know their dog either, which is what happens when the dog jumps at him from a group of men as a reference person , proves wrong. Odenthal orders a house search, Charlotte states that her husband was with her the afternoon, the search yields no results, Odenthal confronts Charlotte in his presence about his relationship with his secretary, Markus dismisses this as nonsense. Outside, while walking, Lena hears the argument between the couple, later she learns that the forensic team has not found traces of the dead or their dog anywhere on the couple's clothes.

A short time later, Hefermehl reported to the officials and confessed to the murder of Ms. Reinicke. He gave the money as the motive, but he made no statements about its whereabouts. When the news appeared in the newspaper, the couple made it up, relieved, Charlotte asks Markus' forgiveness for suspecting him, Markus was covertly securely getting the money out of hiding. A short time later, the officers found out that Hefermehl, who had a criminal record for holding false academic degrees, had an alibi and was out of the question as a perpetrator, apparently he wanted attention. Kopper no longer believes his statement that he met a woman in the apartment shortly after Reinicke's death. Odenthal later visits the carefree Buchmeyer couple and tells Markus on the head that they have released yeast flour and that she is convinced of his guilt, but Markus is still unimpressed. Friedrichs points out Odenthal to the unknown woman in Reinicke's apartment, on the basis of several photos Hefermehl actually recognizes Charlotte as the unknown, Odenthal, who considers Charlotte to be the big weak point in the wall of silence, lets them know that she is identified and Odenthal suspects the course of the crime . In the evening, Charlotte asks Markus whether he actually killed Reinicke, she makes it clear that she is now afraid of him and wants to leave him, he locks her up overnight and threatens to put the booty from the prison on her as a bounty if they betray him. The next morning, Charlotte uses an unobserved moment to flee from her husband in front of the eyes of Odenthal waiting in front of the house. Odenthal follows Charlotte to a forest hotel and goes all out by anonymously informing Markus about his wife's whereabouts. Startled by a control call from her husband, Charlotte leaves the hotel hastily, Markus notices Odenthal waiting and knocks her down, Markus can intercept his wife. Friedrichs, disguised as a French tourist, and the awakened Odenthal arrest Markus at the last moment when he tries to kill his wife. Since Charlotte refuses to testify out of fear of Markus, whose prey was not found, Markus can only be charged with the attempted murder of his wife and the attack on Odenthal.
