The Agency - In the crosshairs of the CIA (original title: The Agency ) is an American television series , based on an idea by Michael Frost Beckner and produced by Shaun Cassidy , Gail Katz and Wolfgang Petersen .

action

The Agency takes a critical look - especially from the protagonists' point of view - behind the scenes of the foreign intelligence service CIA and its machinations and entanglements, but without explaining or fundamentally questioning the foreign policy of the United States , abuse of power , economic policy , terrorism and their backgrounds and causes .

At the center of each episode is an exciting and oppressive staged covert operation by the CIA in countries on all continents, including in the fight against assassinations (also by the CIA), terrorism , drug trafficking , hostage-taking , white-collar crime , human trafficking and, in particular, the "safeguarding of interests" of the USA .

The storyline (including those of the characters' private lives) spans the undercover agent Matt Callan in the first season (in the second season: AB Stiles) and accompanies him and a small team of analysts, field and office staff in the CIA headquarters . Matt is a retired Special Forces , instructor, and overworked operational field worker who has never questioned an order or disapproved of an assignment. His brother Eric was killed under mysterious, non-disclosure circumstances while on a CIA mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina , and Matt is trying to investigate why.

The team includes Lisa Fabrizzi, Eric's fiancée, officer in charge and counter-terrorism director : Since Eric's death, Lisa has buried herself in her work to get over his death, but also seems to worry about Matt, who feels more than friendship for her. Terri Lowell is a conscientious computer graphic designer , new to the team, in the middle of her divorce and struggling with her double life - working at the CIA and the bogus identity that the employees show to the outside world: She and her colleague Lex are among other things on the production and forgery specialized documents and identity cards, which the agents in their Top Secret need missions.

Other central figures are Carl Reese, an honest management officer and loyal assistant to the director of the Agency, and Joshua Nankin, who, as head of the technical department, provides the agents with the documents, bogus identities and background information necessary for their operations. Jackson Haisley is a widowed father and senior analyst who sifts through the incoming information and evaluates it for the attention of the management staff for the ongoing operations of the CIA, at the same time increasingly beginning to question his work.

And last but not least Alex Pierce (until halfway through the first season the director of the CIA ), a staunch patriot who on the one hand is responsible for operations before the US Senate and, if necessary , extends the limits of credible deniability . On the other hand, he tries to assert his position against his predecessor (Robert Quinn) and possible successor (Senator Tom Gage) as well as against the competing US intelligence agencies and authorities.

production

The majority of the episodes were filmed in Washington, DC and Los Angeles , some at the CIA headquarters in Langley , Virginia , a suburb in northwest Washington DC. The series originally planned to focus on how the CIA did in the post- cold era War justified its continued existence.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , the focus changed fundamentally, and the plot was revised: the figure of the chief director of the CIA (Alex Pierce) was replaced, characters and episodes were redefined, the planned pilot film (attack on a terrorist cell) was redefined filmed and broadcast as the fifth episode. The declared “ enemy image ” was now the war on terror , from then on Homeland Security played a central role and some actors, especially Gloria Reuben and Gil Bellows , dropped out of production at the end of the first season.

Charisma

It was first broadcast on September 27, 2001 on the US broadcaster CBS and on German-language television on January 15, 2003 and June 23, 2005 on RTL II . This was followed by ATV , 13th Street and the ORF 1 .

A third season was planned, but was not produced due to the falling ratings after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. This led to repeated and so far unsuccessful petitions from the international fan base to bring the open ending and the various storylines (see Farscape ) to a conclusion.

Some of the English-language episode titles refer to Hollywood films that are well-known in German-speaking countries and some (mostly the locations) refer to them, for example The Year of Living Dangerously and French Kiss .
