action

Tim Kearney is a loser. This is his fourth time in jail for a crime. Then he is offered by Tad Gruzsa, a DEA agent, to play the drug dealer legend Bobby Z in a DEA deal, as he recently died in an embassy in Thailand . He is said to be extradited to the Mexican drug mafia in exchange for a detained DEA agent . If he succeeded in the subsequent escape, he would be free. But Gruzsa tries to shoot Kearney on the spot. But since he stumbles at exactly the same moment, the plan fails and a shootout breaks out. Both Kearney and Gruzsa survive, and Kearney is brought to the estate of Brian Cervier, a winemaker who works with the drug mafia, where he is supposed to meet the boss of the mafia, Don Huertero.

Kearney learns from Elizabeth, who also lives with Z's son Kit, that Don Huertero wants to have him killed. At the same time, Gruzsa incites a gang of motorcyclists on Kearney, who still have an account to pay for because he killed their leader in prison with a license plate. Kearney flees, but repeatedly encounters adversaries on both sides. But he always manages to get rid of this relatively easily, which is usually fatal for his attackers. It turns out that Bobby Z wants to fake his death because he cheated on Don Huertero and drove his daughter to suicide and now fears his revenge. So he hired the corrupt agent Tad Gruzsa, who wanted to stage the death of Bobby Z with the death of the doppelganger Tim Kearney.

After Don Huertero was killed in an exchange of fire in Elizabeth's trailer , Elizabeth, Tim and Kit want to flee together with Bobby Z's money in order to build a new existence in safety. Shortly before the departure of their yacht , the bikers arrive at the jetty and start to fire at Tim. He runs away and is finally confronted on a bridge with Tad, Bobby and some bikers. The bikers face the dilemma that they cannot tell Tim Kearny and Bobby Z apart. Kearney manages to convince them in a verbal battle that Bobby Z is actually Tim Kearney. Ultimately, Kit, who thinks Tim is his father, calls out to him. The bikers then shoot Bobby Z because they mistake him for Tim Kearney, because they know that he has no son. In the firefight that breaks out on the bridge, Tad Gruzsa and a few bikers die. Tim Kearney saves himself by jumping into the water and takes Kit and Elizabeth out to sea on the way to a better future.

reception

The lexicon of international films judges that Kill Bobby Z is "a varied action film that does not redefine the genre, but imaginatively fills the patterns with the spirit of the 1970s" .

Christoph Petersen von Filmstarts is of the opinion that the film is a “straightforward gangster thriller” that is “a humorous reminiscence of the tough, straightforward genre cinema of the 70s” . Petersen compared the film to Sam Peckinpah's film Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia . He praised Olivia Wilde in the role of femme fatale . In summary, Petersen said, “A straight thriller story, handmade action and a great cast offer really good retro fun” , and awarded 3.5 out of 5 possible points.

According to the kino.de editorial team, the film is a “quick, dirty little action thriller” . Paul Walker convinces in the lead role with his "sympathetic presence" "It rocks as if the old B-movies by Don Siegel , in which Americans are stranded in Mexico, never died out."

The editorial staff of Cinema is of the opinion, "is not boring, pats the macho soul and pleases with plenty of self-irony" , even if it does not come close to the "true masters of the adrenaline film like Don Siegel and Walter Hill " . Their conclusion is that the "action riot is not logical, not elegant and not clever - but entertaining in a sloppy way" .
