The continuous population decline since the middle of the 19th century is essentially due to the mechanization of agriculture and the associated loss of jobs. In 1986 the formerly independent neighboring town of Gardais was incorporated.

economy

The two villages of Thiron and Gardais have always been rural communities with a high proportion of pasture farming. In addition, the manufacture and sale of charcoal played an important role in human survival.

history

Sainte-Trinité abbey church

The history of Thiron is closely linked to the Benedictine abbey founded by Bernhard von Tiron between 1109 and 1122 ; a plot of land was previously given to him by Rotrou III. , the Count of Perche . The monastery developed in the course of the Middle Ages to the mother monastery of numerous other abbeys and priories in France and England; in 1629 it joined the reform order of Maurists on, but the French Revolution began the monastic life to an end.

Attractions

  • The unadorned single-nave abbey church from the early 12th century still stands from the former Sainte-Trinité monastery, the nave of which is covered by a wooden vault with tie rods . The building has been recognized as a monument historique since 1912 .
  • Some outbuildings such as the former tithe barn (Grange aux Dîmes) from the 15th century, a mill and the monastery bakery are also listed.
  • The former monastery gardens are being replanted with vegetables and flowers.
  • The former baroque abbey building from the 17th century served as a school under the masons; later a military school was housed here.
