The 11th stage of the Tour de France 2005 led from Courchevel to Briançon . The main obstacles on the 173-kilometer section were the Col de la Madeleine (1993 m), Col du Télégraphe (1566 m) and Col du Galibier (2645 m) passes . The Galibier was the highest point of this year's tour.
A few kilometers after the start, Thor Hushovd and Samuel Dumoulin launched the first attack. The two were able to get a maximum lead of 6:48 minutes, but were caught up again on the ascent to the Col de la Madeleine. Responsible for this was a group of ten drivers who had pulled away from the field; to this belonged Alexander Vinokurow , Óscar Pereiro and Santiago Botero .
These three riders were the first to reach the top of the Madeleine pass after Botero was briefly suspended. On the descent into the valley, Pereiro came off the road and drove over the mountain pasture, but remained unharmed and was able to catch up again. On the Col du Télégraphe the lead of the leading group was 2:50 minutes.
In the 17-kilometer ascent to the Col du Galibier, Pereiro fell back and was overtaken by the field. A little later, the Kazakh Vinokurov left the Colombian Botero behind and reached the top of the pass with a lead of 40 seconds. The group with Lance Armstrong and all favorites for the overall win was another two minutes behind. The road down to Briançon had become wet from a brief rain shower, so Vinokourov drove down very carefully and was overtaken by Botero again after seven kilometers.
In the valley of the Durance , Vinokurov and Botero lost some time on their closest pursuers; With just under five kilometers to go, the lead was 1:45 minutes. Vinokurow decided the sprint for the stage win, who was able to win his second tour stage. Armstrong's group crossed the finish line 1:15 minutes behind.
Jens Voigt , who had been wearing the yellow jersey of the overall leader two days earlier, was weakened by a fever and reached the goal 46:43 minutes after Vinokurow. He missed the time limit of this stage by 42 seconds and was disqualified.
The Italian Dario Frigo made negative headlines . He and his wife were arrested and questioned by police the night before in Courchevel. Pharmaceutical products were found in Frigo's wife's car during a routine inspection by customs officers near Chambéry . It was the second doping-related exclusion from the Tour de France within just two days: the previous day, the Russian Jewgeni Petrow was excluded from the Tour of France by Lampre-Caffita because his hematocrit value was too high during a doping test .
From a sporting point of view, the former tour runner-up Joseba Beloki was the big loser, because the Basque, who was 21st in the overall standings before stage, lost exactly 31:15 minutes to the Armstrong group.
