action

After the Kurdish criminal Firat Astan was arrested at the end of the television film Purgatory , he was extradited to the Turkish judiciary in Istanbul. In Hamburg he had murdered the wife of the police officer Nick Tschiller, among others. Tschiller's daughter Lenny sets out for Istanbul to take revenge on Astan for her mother's death. Astan overpowers her and Lenny is captured shortly afterwards.

Nick Tschiller travels to Istanbul to get Lenny back. He tracks down Astan, who is being liquidated before his eyes shortly after he was able to inform Tschiller that Lenny was sold to Moscow by the trafficker Süleyman Şeker. Tschiller is arrested by the Turkish police for killing Astan. His colleague and friend Yalcin Gümer frees him from prison, and both of them take up the chase to Moscow.

In Moscow, following Astan's advice, they come to an organ dealer ring around the German doctor Dr. Schmidt, known as The Sandman , on the track, who removes organs from girls imported from Turkey and sells them. Tschiller and Gümer find out that Lenny was implanted with a bomb that Şeker uses to plan an attack on the industrialist Alexander Kinsky. They can track down Lenny at the last second, Gümer can eliminate Şeker with the help of his Russian colleague Boris Golidzyn, and Tschiller can remove the bomb from his daughter's body just in time. At the end, the viewer sees how the three protagonists arrive at Hamburg Airport.

reception

Reviews

Before it was released, the film was only shown to selected press representatives, which is why many media did not report.

Susanne Sturm from TV Spielfilm rated the film positively as “big action for a small budget. Anyone who likes Nick Tschiller will love Off Duty ”.

Kinokino , the film magazine of Bavarian TV , judged against it: “ Tschiller: Off Duty is mindless man's nonsense with a lot of noise. Thank goodness there is Fahri Yardim; it makes for a bit of irony in the film. ”The film service also said that the film was designed“ as a thriller with no meaning in terms of content, but a gripping thriller thanks to dense action scenes ”and thatTschiller's“ vigilante ”and“ vigilante attitude ”are disturbing.

Sophie Albers Ben Chamo vom Stern believes that Off Duty is “great old school action cinema that has never been seen before in Germany - with a furrowed hero, his humorous sidekick, a really unpleasant villain and a ludicrous story that all chasing through several countries ”.

In the face of many improbabilities and a conclusion in which the protagonist without surgical training cuts the bomb out of his daughter's body without anesthesia, Peter Praschl fled into the irony in the features section of the world : "Only pedantic idiots insist that art should accept the principle of reality" .

Popular success

After around 117,000 viewers on the first weekend, the film Off Duty had around 67,000 viewers on the second weekend, and around 25,000 viewers on the third weekend and thus remained well below expectations, also taking into account the considerable publicity in the run-up. By the end of March 2016, the film had reached almost 280,000 viewers.

The television premiere was followed by 5.34 million viewers, which corresponds to a market share of 18.6 percent. These numbers are comparatively low for Tatort first broadcasts. According to media reports, Schweiger blamed ARD for this, which placed the film "in the summer slump " and parallel to the soccer World Cup. However, the ARD entertainment coordinator countered that the length of the film made it difficult to find a suitable slot. An article in Stern also notes that Schweiger's explanations for the low number of viewers (vacation time and soccer World Cup) are questionable: there was no World Cup game on the broadcast day, and a few days earlier there was a repeat of the crime scene in the third WDR program Viewers reached as Schweiger's TV premiere on the established broadcasting slot.

Award

Tschiller: Off Duty was nominated for the European CIVIS Cinema Award in 2016 .

Other aftermath

The film was indexed by the State Cinema Agency in Ukraine because the Russian agents were positively represented.
