Spaceships and space stations in the Star Trek universe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article describes the main spacecraft and space stations, which are also called Starbase, in the fictional Star Trek - universe .

Spaceships with the part of their name Enterprise

With the exception of the spaceship from the television series Star Trek: Enterprise, set in the 22nd century, and a predecessor, all ships share both the prefix USS (for United S tar S hip or for United S pace S hip ) and the registration number NCC- 1701 , to which a letter is added for the successor ships.

USS Enterprise XCV-330

The ship can be seen in Star Trek: The Film on one of the pictures showing past ships named Enterprise. It is also mentioned in the episode first flight of the series Star Trek: Enterprise , but already appears as part of the backdrop in the first movie. Originally the model was an early draft for the Original Series Enterprise. The design was used in a modified form for the ships of the Vulcans in Star Trek: Enterprise as well as for the NASA design concept of the IXS Enterprise .

Enterprise (NX-01)

The NX-class Enterprise with registration number NX-01 is Jonathan Archer's spaceship from the television series Enterprise . Since this series takes place long before the other series in the "pioneering days" of space travel, the model only slightly resembles the other spaceships. John Evans and Doug Drexler , the designers in charge at Paramount, used images of a warplane from the Second World War ( Lockheed P-38 Lightning ) as a basis to create the desired “retro look”. Drexler says that he also incorporated numerous allusions to the technical properties of the NCC-1701.

However, the model quickly became controversial with fans because it bears a striking resemblance to an upside-down "Akira class" from the fictional 24th century, seen in the eighth movie Star Trek: First Contact . The ship received the nickname "Akiraprise". The bridge design also came under criticism, as few allusions were made to the later Enterprise of the Kirk era. Among other things, the computer screens are not at all similar to those in other, well-known Star Trek spaceships.

On a display in the episode “The Deviation” (time: 4 min. 25 sec.), This Enterprise also receives the later usual fleet prefix “USS”, but this is a production error.

In the movie Star Trek Into Darkness , a short scene in Admiral Marcus' office shows a model of the Enterprise (NX-01) in a row with historical model ships such as the Space Shuttle Enterprise , the Ares V , the Phoenix and the USS Kelvin . The successor in this series is not, as expected, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), but the USS Vengeance . This fact is cleared up by the plot and motives of Admiral Marcus towards the end of the film.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

The USS Enterprise (Constitution-class) with the registration number NCC-1701 is the spaceship of James Tiberius Kirk from the television series Spaceship Enterprise (and the animated sequel The Enterprise ). In the first pilot, the USS Enterprise is under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. In an earlier version of the script, the Enterprise's first captain was Robert T. April. Both Kirk predecessors are featured in the Star Trek episodes: Pike appears for the first time in the double episode Talos IV - Tabu , which used scenes from the first pilot film. April only appears in the cartoon series "The Enterprise". In the original series, the Enterprise is 289 m long and has 23 decks. The bridge is on deck 1 and the main engine room is on deck 19.

The ship also appears in a different form in the movies Star Trek: The Movie and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock , as well as in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The model was drawn by Walter M. Jefferies (1921–2003), designer at Paramount, in 1960. Jefferies tried to make his design as futuristic as possible and to differentiate it from the rockets known at the time, while still emphasizing the enormous propulsion power of the spaceship. This is how the well-known design emerged from a "flying saucer" with two huge drive gondolas. Jefferies also gave the ship the serial number 1701, according to his report he chose it completely arbitrarily from easily legible digits. Jefferies explains the code “NCC” as follows: In the 20th century, aircraft registered in the USA have an “N” in the call sign, “C” stands for a civil aircraft. He added the second "C" because it looked better. On official plans, NCC stands for "Naval Construction Contract". The original model, which is 3.30 meters long and weighs 90 kg, can be seen in the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institute . On the occasion of the revision of the original series, in which the scenes were visually enhanced by modern computer effects, the original model was measured using modern methods in order to create an identical-looking CGI model. In addition to these models, there is also a new physical Enterprise, which was built for the episode Always the Load with the Tribbles from the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine series . For the finale of the Star Trek: Enterprise series , a computer model was created, which, however, was not used to rework the old series.

As a reminder of the legendary design of the original Enterprise by Walter M. Jefferies, on which all later Enterprises and almost all other Starfleet ships are based, the maintenance tubes in the following series are generally referred to as "Jefferies tubes".

A new model was created for the film Star Trek (2009) , which looks more like the original series. The corridors are kept in white and have a round cross-section. The bridge looks much more modern and brighter than the earlier variants of the USS Enterprise.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)

A replica of the Enterprise NCC-1701-A seen in Vulcan , Alberta

The USS Enterprise (Constitution-Class Refit / Enterprise-Class) with the registration number NCC-1701-A is the almost identical successor to the NCC-1701 that was destroyed in the movie Star Trek III: In Search of Mr. Spock . In the fictional storyline, it was named USS Yorktown during its construction, but is renamed in honor of the Enterprise crew. This is an allusion to the beginning of the series, because in the planning phase of the first Star Trek season in the 1960s, the spaceship should still be called "Yorktown" and will later be renamed "Enterprise". The ship appears in the films Star Trek IV: Back to the Present , in Star Trek V: At the Edge of the Universe and in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Land .

Andrew Probert and Richard Taylor adapted the original Enterprise design to technical (e.g. touch-sensitive screens) and aesthetic progress (pastel colors on the bridge). The bridge module has been changed several times in the Enterprise's last years of service. Star Trek IV features a revised version of the original bridge from Movies I through III. For Star Trek V, director William Shatner had them fundamentally changed, although Star Trek V is directly linked to Star Trek IV. The brown pastel colors should represent a logical transition in the design between Kirk's Enterprise A and Picard's ship, the Enterprise D. In Star Trek VI, it was decided again to use a suitably harder, more military design to underline the drama of the plot.

The approximately 2.54 meter long original film model was auctioned on October 7, 2006 at the "40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection" auction at Christie's in New York City for $ 284,800.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)

A new ship was designed for the next movie, Star Trek: Generations Meetings . The USS Enterprise (Excelsior-class Refit) with the registration number NCC-1701-B is the ship of Captain John Harriman ( Alan Ruck ) in the film. The NCC-1701-B is also mentioned in some novels.

The design is a modification of the "Excelsior" that Bill George had designed for Star Trek III . The modifications were made by John Eaves for lead designer Herman Zimmerman. This modification of the Excelsior is therefore often referred to as the Excelsior II class.

The approximately 2.35-meter-long film model designed by Nilo Rodis and ILM as USS Excelsior for Star Trek III, IV and VI built, later renamed and for the presentation of various ships in the series Star Trek - The Next Generation related . It was later modified to represent the Enterprise NCC-1701-B in Star Trek: Generations Meetings . In the movie, the model for the Enterprise B was changed slightly. In contrast to the Excelsior, the Enterprise has a wider hull. However, this change is missing on the display of the navigating bridge. This is due to the fact that the final design of the ship had not yet been finalized before the photographs were taken inside the ship. In the Next Generation Series, the design of the previously unknown Enterprise-B was presented on the legend display in the Enterprise-D conference room. Under the labeling USS Lakota NCC-42768 , this model was in the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection -Auction at Christie's in New York on October 7, 2006 132,000 US dollars auctioned.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C)

The USS Enterprise (Ambassador-class) with the registration number NCC-1701-C appears in the episode The old Enterprise of the series Starship Enterprise - The Next Century . The appearance of the ship shows the development of the spaceship models A – D. Commanded by Captain Rachel Garret ( Tricia O'Neil ), she is destroyed while fighting four Romulan battleships while defending a Klingon outpost. Through this act, the scriptwriters improved the relationship between the "Federation" and the Klingons, which influenced the later plot of the series.

The model of the ship was later slightly modified and reused in the series as the "USS Excalibur".

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)

The USS Enterprise (Galaxy class) with the registration number NCC-1701-D is probably the most famous spaceship in the series, along with the original NCC-1701. She is played by Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ) in the television series Spaceship Enterprise - The Next Century (1987-1993), the pilot for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and the movie Star Trek: Meetings of the Generations (1994) commanded. The Enterprise-D can also be seen in the last episode of Star Trek: Enterprise (2005).

The Enterprise-D is introduced in the pilot episode of Star Trek: The Next Century as one of the first ships of the "Galaxy Class" and is badly damaged in the movie Star Trek: Meet the Generations in a gun battle with a Klingon Bird-of-Prey . The drive section is destroyed due to a warp core break, the saucer section can no longer be salvaged after the crash landing. Thus, Jean-Luc Picard remains her only captain, although in some of the crew's adventures both Captain Edward Jellico (“Secret Mission on Celtris III”) and Commander Riker were temporarily listed as captain of the Enterprise (TNG “Target Earth”).

In the Spaceship Enterprise - The Next Century series , the Enterprise-D is 642 m long and has 42 decks. On deck 1 is the bridge and the preparation room of Captain Picard.

The Enterprise was designed by Andrew Probert, who was involved in redesigning the original Enterprise for Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Originally only entrusted with the design of the navigation bridge of the Enterprise-D, Probert had also made a drawing of the ship's hull in his spare time, which was shown to Gene Roddenberry . Roddenberry decided to use the design as the basis for the new type of ship. For the pilot of The Next Generation , Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) built two models (0.6 and 2 meters long) under the supervision of Ease Owyeung, which were used during the first two seasons. For the third season, Greg Jein built a 1.5 meter long model with a more detailed finish, which was first seen in the episode The Defector and was then used until the end of the series. The 2-meter model was still used from time to time when a “separation of the saucer section” was to be filmed, and was last worked on at ILM for Star Trek: Generations . This 2-meter model was auctioned on October 7, 2006 at the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection auction at Christie's in New York for $ 576,000 to a telephone bidder.

However, the idea of separating saucers is not in itself a new ship function, but it is the reintegration of the two ship parts. Originally, a scenario for the Enterprise was planned in the first movie, which envisaged an evacuation of the Enterprise by blowing off the saucer section. However, this scene was partly discarded for reasons of cost.

John Knoll from ILM also created a computer graphics model of the Enterprise-D for Star Trek: Generations , which was converted into the LightWave format and then used for various ships in some episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and the Timeless episode from Star Trek: Voyager was used. For the last episode of Star Trek: Enterprise , These Are the Voyages ... , Gabriel Köerner from Eden FX developed a new 3D version of the ship.

The dedication plaque of the Enterprise-D on the main bridge contains the ship's motto "... to boldly go where no one has gone before" , translated as "... to bravely go where no one has been before ." The motto of the Enterprise 1701 under Captain Kirk, however, limited himself to the demand "... where no man has gone before " ( "... where no man has gone before" ) and opened every Star Trek episode of the first series as the closing sentence of the intro.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)

Enterprise E model

The USS Enterprise (Sovereign-class) with registration number NCC-1701-E from the movies Star Trek: The First Contact , Star Trek: The Uprising and Star Trek: Nemesis is under the command of Jean-Luc Picard . Due to increasing tensions (including with the Romulan Empire), it is less focused on research and more on combat situations, which is reflected in the stronger armament and shields as well as equipment with quantum torpedoes and heavily armed shuttles.

This ship was also mainly designed by John Eaves and Herman Zimmerman. Rick Sternbach drew the blueprints for this. For the interiors, superstructures from the Star Trek: Voyager series were reused. Industrial Light and Magic built a three-meter-tall model for Star Trek: The First Contact . In Star Trek: The Uprising , the ship was only represented by computer animation. Star Trek: Nemesis used a mixture of footage of a physical model and computer-generated images. The ship belongs to the Sovereign class. Sovereign means in German the ruler / prince / sovereign . This is to emphasize the grandeur of this ship.

The Enterprise-E was designed exclusively for the movies, according to Rick Berman. There will be no television appearances by Sovereign-class ships. The ship was actually only marginally mentioned or suggested in Star Trek: DS9. In video games, this class of ships was used in Star Trek Armada I & II , for example .

The approximately 3 meter long film model was auctioned on October 5, 2006 at the 40 Years of Star Trek: The Collection auction at Christie's in New York for 132,000 US dollars.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-J)

The Enterprise-J can be seen in the episode Azati Prime from the third season of the series Star Trek: Enterprise . It is described as the Federation's spaceship from the 26th century, on which humans and Xindi, among others, peacefully do their service together.

ISS Enterprise (NX-01)

The ISS Enterprise is the counterpart to the Enterprise NX-01 from the mirror universe. It is the flagship of the Terran Empire and is under the command of Captain Forrest. After a mutiny, however, his first officer, Commander Jonathan Archer, takes command and flies with her to Tholian room, where he finds the USS Defiant from the well-known Star Trek universe. The Enterprise is then destroyed by the Tholians, but Archer's away team on the Defiant is able to escape with the same.

It is technically a lot more advanced than its counterpart from the "normal" universe. So she has a tractor beam instead of gripping arms and is armed with photon torpedoes, as well as a Suliban cloaking device with which she can fire camouflaged.

ISS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

It is the counterpart to Kirk's Enterprise in the Mirror Universe. She is commanded by Kirk's counterpart from the mirror universe, who killed his predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike. Kirk and an away team get on board during a transporter accident. There they exert influence on the Spock of the mirror universe, who then becomes emperor and weakens the empire with reforms so that the Klingon-Cardassian alliance can finally conquer the empire.

USS Defiant (NX-74205)

The USS Defiant has been stationed at Deep Space Nine since 2371. The Defiant is a warship and has a cloaking device that allows it to become invisible. Towards the end of the Dominion War in 2375, the Defiant was destroyed in battle. The structurally identical USS Sao Paulo was renamed the USS Defiant a few days later. In the following year, the Defiant is converted from a warship to a research ship ( see also: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (literary sequel) ).

Terok Nor or Deep Space Nine

The Terok Nor space station was once constructed by the Cardassians and operated for ore processing. In 2369, Starfleet took over the station in cooperation with the Bajorans. As a result, it will be renamed Deep Space Nine and moved from the orbit of the planet Bajor near the Alpha Quadrant end of the Bajoran wormhole. In 2376, the first year after the end of the plot of the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , the station was badly damaged, so that Starfleet replaced the station's fusion core with that of the almost identical, idle sister station Empok Nor ( see also: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (literary sequel) ). In 2383, Deep Space Nine was destroyed ( Star Trek: Typhon Pact series ), in the following two years Starfleet built a new space station called Deep Space Nine ( Star Trek: The Fall series ).

USS Voyager (NCC-74656)

The USS Voyager is the eponymous ship and main location of the television series Star Trek: Voyager .

The ship entered service in 2371 and is under the command of Captain Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ). It is an Intrepid-class ship and at the time of commissioning it has the most advanced research facilities in Starfleet. The Voyager is one of the few Starfleet ships designed for landings on planets. In an accident, Voyager arrives at the other end of the galaxy in the Delta Quadrant. There she is cut off from Starfleet and thus from further developed technology. During the journey back to the Alpha Quadrant, however, various modifications are made by the crew.

After a seven-year journey, the Voyager and its crew can reach Earth.

USS Discovery (NCC-1031)

The USS Discovery is the eponymous ship and the main location of the television series Star Trek: Discovery . The Discovery is an experimental ship researching spore propulsion, which can jump 90 light years using the spores of a mushroom. She played a vital role in the Federation's war against the Klingons in 2256.

USS Franklin (NX-326)

The USS Franklin is a starship of the United Earth Starfleet and later the Federation of Starfleet. It is the first earth ship that can reach Warp 4. The Franklin is also the spaceship that Kirk and his crew use to flee the planet Altamid in 2263 and save the Yorktown space station ( Star Trek Beyond ).

Reception and adaptations

The various Enterprises also appear outside of the “Star Trek” universe, and there are allusions to the spaceships in various series.

  • In the Futurama episode The Last Trekkie , the Planet Express ship gets warp nacelles that look like those of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701).
  • In the Futurama film Bender's Game , the Enterprise (NX-01) and the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) take part in a demolition derby .
  • In Stargate - Command SG-1 , Jack O'Neill often suggests naming the spaceship Prometheus "Enterprise".
  • In the 1969 episode , Jack O'Neill claims that his name is Captain Kirk and that he comes from the spaceship Enterprise.
  • In the Battlestar Galactica series , the Enterprise often appears in the background as part of the fleet. In addition, the number 1701 (the registration number of the Enterprise) appears frequently. This is a reference to Ronald D. Moore's time on Star Trek.
  • Due to an initiative by fans of the original TV series, NASA named the first prototype of a space shuttle after the ship from the TV series. In later series, this space shuttle appears as a predecessor in a long line of ships called Enterprise - including in the opening credits of Star Trek: Enterprise . The space shuttle was on view until 2012 at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum , which is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institute. It has since been exhibited in the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on the former aircraft carrier USS Intrepid in New York Harbor.
  • The original studio model of the first Enterprise is on display at the National Air and Space Museum .
