The University of Alabama (including Alabama , UA , or Bama called) is a public university in Tuscaloosa in the western US state of Alabama . With 37,100 students (fall 2015), the university is the largest public university in Alabama. It is the primary location of the University of Alabama system .

history

The university was founded in 1831. After an opening ceremony, she started teaching on April 18th.

Lack of discipline and poor student behavior have made the university more difficult since it opened. The first presidents therefore enforced strict guidelines. The students were banned from drinking, swearing, and unauthorized visits outside of campus. Riots and shootings occurred more often.

To combat the serious discipline problem, President Landon Garland finally advocated converting the university into a military school and received government approval in 1860. Many of the cadets who graduated from the school subsequently served as officers in the Confederate Army in the Civil War . As a result, the campus was burned down by Union troops in April 1865. Only four buildings survived the fire.

The university reopened in 1871 and 1880, abandoning its military structure after it was officially opened to women in 1892.

On June 11, 1963, the booth in the Schoolhouse Door came about when Alabama's Governor George Wallace posted himself at the door of a university building to prevent two African American students Vivian Malone and James Hood from enrolling there, as this was against would violate the previous practice of segregation . Only after federal police officers , the National Guard and the Deputy Federal Minister of Justice Nicholas Katzenbach had forced him to step away, did he clear the way for the students. Later in his life he apologized for his opposition to the integration of the " races " at the time.

In the 1970s, the university's lecturers included some former NASA scientists who had previously worked at the Marshall Space Flight Center , including Ernst Stuhlinger and Konrad Dannenberg .

Parts of the university campus and individual buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places , including the Gorgas-Manly Historic District .
