The Valenciennes Football Club (still Valenciennes-Anzin FC in the coat of arms ) is a French football club from the city of Valenciennes in the north department ; Anzin is an adjacent small town.

history

It was founded in 1913 as Football Club de Valenciennes , renamed Union Sportive Valenciennes-Anzin (or USVA or VA for short ) a year later ; that was the name of the club until it went bankrupt in 1996. The club triggered the "Affair Tapie" (usually referred to as Affaire OM-VA in France ): Bernard Tapie was then president of Olympique Marseille , which tried at the end of the 1992/93 season to manipulate the result of the championship game (final score: 1-0 for OM) by bribing several Valenciennes players.

Founded in 1996 as Valenciennes Football Club , the fans continue to call it VA , and officials also value this continuity. The club colors are still red and white, and the league team still played at the city-center Stade Nungesser , named after aviator Charles Nungesser , before moving to the new Stade du Hainaut in the summer of 2011 .

The club's president is Jean-Raymond Legrand, who replaced the long-time incumbent Francis Decourrière in the summer of 2011; the first team of the second division , which was at risk of relegation at the time , had been coached by David Le Frapper , who replaced Ariël Jacobs , since the end of February 2015 . Former national player Faruk Hadžibegić (61 caps for Yugoslavia) has been coach in Valenciennes since the beginning of 2016 .

League affiliation

The northern French mining district around Lens, Lille, Tourcoing, Roubaix and Valenciennes, on the border with Belgium, is one of the very early strongholds of French football. The club played first-rate ( Division 1 , renamed Ligue 1 since 2002 ) in 1935/36, 1937/38, 1944/45, 1956–1961, 1962–1971, 1972/73, 1975–1982, 1992/93 and - after VA rose twice in a row - again in 2006-2014.
