Vasilios Kotronias ( Greek Βασίλειος Κοτρωνιάς , born August 25, 1964 in Athens ) is a Greek chess player .

Life

He received the title of International Master in 1986 and has been a Grand Master since 1990 . Vasilios Kotronias, originally from Athens, played for Cyprus between 1998 and 2004 , but then returned to the Greek Chess Federation. In February 2015 he was fourth in the Greek Elo ranking, which he had led for a long time.

He was able to win the Greek individual championship ten times (1986 to 1988, 1990 to 1992, 1994, 2006, 2010 and 2014). He won chess tournaments in 1988 in Athens ( Acropolis tournament ), 1992 in Wijk aan Zee ( category 10 ), 1993 in Komotini and on Corfu , 1993, 1994 and 1995 in Gausdal , 1996 in Rishon LeZion , 2001 in Glyfada , 2003 in Gibraltar (together with Nigel Short ) and Athens, 2004 in Hastings (together with Jonathan Rowson ), 2005 and again in 2007 in Kalamaria .

He took part in 13 Chess Olympiads ( 1984 to 1996 , 2000 to 2008 and 2012 ), eight of them on the top board with a total of 94 points from 154 games (+63 = 62 −29). At the 2008 Chess Olympiad , he received an individual bronze medal for his score of 8.5 out of 11 on the second board. At the 2010 Chess Olympiad , he accompanied the Greek national team not as a player, but as captain. In 2000 and 2002 he played for Cyprus, otherwise for Greece. In eight participations in European team championships (two for Cyprus, six for Greece) from 1989 to 2013, including the first seven on board one, he achieved an overall result of 37 out of 65 (+23 = 28-14). He had a positive balance every time and received an individual silver medal in León in 2001 for his result of 5.5 out of 8 and a gold medal in Warsaw in 2013 for his result of 5 out of 7 on the reserve board. He also took part in the 2010 World Team Championship with Greece .

He plays club chess in Greece (for Kavala , formerly for SO Patron and Peristeri Athens ), France (for La Tour Sarrazine - Antibes ), Italy, Romania, Serbia, Sweden (from the 2006/07 season to the 2008/09 season for Skara SS , from the 2009/10 season for the Viking team from Sollentuna ), the Czech Republic (for Slavoj Ostrava-Poruba ) and Hungary (for the Aquaprofit Nagykanizsai Tungsram Sakk-Klub ). With Aquaprofit he won the Hungarian team championship in the 2006/07 and 2008/09 seasons and took part in the European Club Cup 2007, with the Viking team he was Swedish team champion in the 2009/10 and 2011/12 seasons . In the German federal chess league he played for PSV Duisburg in the 1996/97 season and for SG Trier in 2007/08 .

In the 2014 European elections , Kotronias was a nominated candidate for the To Potami party .
