In addition to the main island Vega, the islands of Ylvingen and Omnøy are also inhabited. Other islands are u. a. Lånan and Skogsholmen .

The south of the island of Vega is dominated by the 700 m high mountain Vegtindan , while the north is dominated by a moor landscape . The islands of Hysvær and Søla are part of the Hysvær / Søla nature reserve.

A second area, the Eidemsliene nature reserve , was proposed as worthy of protection as early as 1911.

history

The oldest settlements on Vega date back 10,000 years to the Stone Age . These are the oldest documented settlements in Northern Norway. Presumably the fish-rich waters around the islands ensured that people settled there.

The Vega Archipelago with its 6,500 large and small islands is on since 2004 list of UNESCO World Heritage .

Culture

The community takes part in the Nordland sculpture landscape with the sculpture “En ny samtale (A new conversation)” by the Finnish artist Kain Tapper .

economy

The main industries are agriculture, fishing and local services. There is also some fish processing in the community.
