Versonnex is a French commune in the department of Haute-Savoie in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes .

geography

Versonnex is located at 477  m , about 15 kilometers west of the city of Annecy (as the crow flies). The farming village extends from a promising location on a gently sloping terrain ledge between the valley of the Fier in the southwest and that of the Morge in the east, east of the Montagne du Gros Foug, in the Albanais .

The area of the 4.18 km² municipality covers a section of the western Genevois. The main settlement area is the wide ridge of Versonnex, which gradually descends towards the west and south to the plain on the Fier. At 563  m north of the village the highest point of Versonnex is reached. The eastern border runs along the Morge, which flows to the Fier in a valley cut into the surroundings.

In addition to the actual town center, Versonnex also includes various hamlet settlements and farms, including:

  • Piracot ( 390  m ) slightly elevated above the Fier valley floor
  • Mont Pelly ( 500  m ) at the height north of the village

Neighboring communities of Versonnex are Menthonnex-sous-Clermont in the north, Thusy and Saint-Eusèbe in the east, Vallières-sur-Fier in the south and Crempigny-Bonneguête in the west.

history

Versonnex is first mentioned in a document in the 15th century. The place belonged as a fief to the barons of Sion and Crête.

Attractions

The village church of Saint-Pierre was built in 1852 on the site of a previous church. Only ruins remain from the 16th century Crête Castle. The former Château de Serraval was converted into a farm in 1954. Other sights are the Château de Couey and a mill on the Morge.

With 612 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Versonnex is one of the small communities in the Haute-Savoie department. In the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, the number of inhabitants decreased continuously due to strong emigration (in 1861 there were still 442 inhabitants in Versonnex). Since the mid-1970s, however, a significant increase in population has been recorded.

Economy and Infrastructure

Versonnex is still today a predominantly agricultural village. There are also some local small businesses. Some of the workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area and in the Annecy area.

The village is off the main thoroughfares, but is easily accessible from the D910, which runs from Rumilly to Frangy. The closest connection to the A41 motorway is around 16 km away.
