Ipatowo ( Russian Ипатово ) is a city in the Stavropol region ( Russia ) with 26,053 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the northern Caucasus foothills about 120 km northeast of the regional capital Stavropol on the Kalaus , a left tributary of the Manych .
Ipatowo is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .
The city lies on the railway line Kropotkin ( Kawkasskaya station ) - Svetlograd - Elista, opened on this section in 1930 .
history
The place was founded in 1860 by resettlers from the provinces of Voronezh , Poltava and Kharkov as the village of Tschemrek , probably named after a former Nogai prince . Later Nogai families who had returned from the Ottoman Empire also settled here .
In 1880 the village was renamed Winodelnoje , which refers to the presence of larger state wine cellars in the place (Russian winodel for winegrowers ).
In August 1935, the name was again renamed Ipatowo after the Red Army soldier Pyotr Ipatow (1887-1918) who died here in the Russian Civil War in 1918 .
On December 3, 1979 the city charter was awarded.
