The Volvo 260 series includes the car models Volvo 262, 262 C, 264 and 265 from the Swedish car manufacturer Volvo .

General

In August 1974, the new Volvo 264 sedan was launched together with the 240 series as a replacement for the Volvo 164 .

It was based on the Volvo 244, but differed from it externally by rectangular headlights, a protruding hood nose, larger taillights and six- instead of four-cylinder engines. The recirculating ball steering on the 164 was replaced by rack and pinion steering. At the front there is a strut axle with a lower wishbone and stabilizer, the rear axle is rigid and is guided on four trailing arms and a Panhard rod, Volvo also installed a stabilizer here. There are coil springs both in the front and in the rear. Compared to the 240 models, the front brake discs of the 264 are internally ventilated. The c w value of the 264 is 0.46.

It was initially offered in the equipment variants DL ( De Luxe - basic equipment with fabric upholstery and carburettor engine) and GL ( Grand Luxe - luxury equipment with plush or leather upholstery and injection engine), from 1976 also as GLE ( Grand Luxe Executive ) with standard air conditioning, metallic paint and Injection engine.

The Volvo 265 station wagon was introduced in late summer 1975. In the model years 1976 and 1977 there was also a two-door sedan with a six-cylinder engine for the US market. It was called Volvo 262 and only 3239 copies were produced.

In August 1976, a two-door coupe Volvo 262 C , which was manufactured at Bertone , arrived . Characteristic were the 10 cm lower roof with synthetic leather cover and the significantly more sloping windshield.

In the late summer of 1978 the Volvo 262 C and Volvo 264 got a modified trunk lid that was pulled down and new taillights that were also visible from the side.

Volvo 264 GL (1980–1982)

In autumn 1980, as part of a facelift, all vehicles in the 260 u. a. Changed dashboard, headlights and indicators. There were also narrow bumpers with a black plastic coating. The coupé could now also be ordered with a painted roof instead of the leatherette cover. The engine had been redesigned and from then on made 155 hp (114 kW) at 2849 cc.

In the spring of 1982 the production of the sedans was stopped in favor of the Volvo 760 . Production of the coupé ended around the same time. The station wagon, on the other hand, was available in some markets (e.g. Great Britain, not Germany) under the name “Volvo 260” until autumn 1984. Its production ended with the introduction of the Volvo 760 station wagon.

Engines

The Volvo 264 was powered by a V six-cylinder engine with initially 2.7 liters displacement. It was developed jointly by Peugeot , Renault and Volvo. This machine, known as the " PRV engine ", was initially offered both as a carburetor engine (B27A) and as an injection engine (B27E). The power in model year 1975 was 125 hp (carburettor version) or 140 hp (injection version). The production of the carburettor version was stopped at the end of the 1980 model year. The B27E got a different intake manifold and different camshafts for the 1979 model year. With a slightly increased compression, it now made 148 hp. At the beginning of the 1980 model year, the displacement of the injection version was increased to 2.8 liters and the output increased to 155 hp (B28E engine).

Since the V6 engine was originally planned as a V8 unit , the angle of the cylinder banks was 90 degrees, which would have resulted in even ignition intervals of 90 degrees in a V8 engine. Due to the oil crisis in the early 1970s, the number of cylinders in the engine was reduced by two to six while it was still being developed. At 90 degrees cylinder bank angle, unequal ignition angles of 90 and 150 degrees resulted, which impaired the smoothness of running.

The engine block was made of light metal with inlaid gray cast iron bushings . The valve control took place via two control chains . Motor versions based on this engine, were also models of Renault (R30, R25 , Espace , Alpine ), Peugeot (504 Coupe / Cabriolet, 604, 505 ), Lancia, the De Lorean and the Volvo 760 / 780 installed. Although there was enough space under the long bonnet and in principle a smooth-running Otto in- line six-cylinder would have been available, in contrast to the previous model, the Volvo 164, this was not used.

Volvo 264 TE (1978-1980)

Volvo 264 TE

As a representative vehicle, u. a. For the state fleet in Sweden and the GDR , limousines lengthened by 70 cm were manufactured initially at Bertone in Italy and later in the Yngve Nilssons bodywork factory in Laholm / Sweden. These were called Volvo 264 TE ( Top Executive ). These vehicles had a special interior made of leather or blue or light gray noble velor. There was a third row of seats in front of the rear bench with two folding seats . Between 1976 and 1984 335 264 TE cars were sold worldwide.
