Werner Arno Krenkel (born October 30, 1926 in Altmittweida , Amtshauptmannschaft Rochlitz ; † September 15, 2015 ) was a German classical philologist .

After graduating from high school in Mittweida , Krenkel was a new teacher for a year and from 1947 studied Latin , archeology and English at the University of Rostock . After the state examination in 1951, Krenkel was a teacher at various schools in Rostock and Ribnitz . In 1953 he received a teaching position and became a lecturer in Latin at the University of Rostock. From then on, Krenkel's work was closely linked to this university. Here he received his doctorate in 1957 with a thesis on literary criticism under Lucilius . The habilitation followed in 1963 on the subject of Luciliana in Rostock. Krenkel also spent a large part of his subsequent career at the University of Rostock, from 1964 to 1975 as a lecturer in Latin and archeology, from 1975 to 1991 as associate professor for Latin philology and archeology and from 1991 to 1993 as full professor for Latin philology. Two visiting professorships abroad testify to Krenkel's international reputation: In 1969/70, Krenkel was a Life Fellow at Columbia University in New York City . In 1972 he taught briefly as a visiting professor in Alexandria .

With his work, Krenkel made a name for himself at home and abroad as an outstanding philologist. Above all, his translations and editions by Latin authors such as Celsus , Apuleius , Suetonius , Lucilius , Pliny the Younger and, most recently, Varro are highly regarded in the professional world. Many of his works have been published both in the German Democratic Republic and in the Federal Republic of Germany in respected specialist publishers. After the fall of the Berlin Wall , when Krenkel was given the chair for Latin Philology in Rostock, he was heavily involved in the reorganization of the university, especially in the establishment of the institutes for Romance Studies and Classical Studies . In 1993, Krenkel retired and in 1994 was made an honorary senator of the University of Rostock.

Krenkel had been married since 1950 and had three children.
