geography

Wernquelle

The Wernquelle

The Wern rises between Rannungen and Pfersdorf . While there is a designated on maps Wern source , partly Aubrunnen called on about 285  m above sea level. NN (about one kilometer northeast of the center of Pfersdorf), but this pours on average only one to two liters per second and dries up completely in summer. A few steps after this spring the 4.4 km long Augraben flows from the northeast , which is considered to be the upper reaches of the Wern due to its higher water flow and much greater length. It arises on the southwest edge of the village of Rannungen at a little over 325  m above sea level. NN and turns after about 600 meters in the direction of the inflow of its more or less constant left upper course, which is called Lein- or Leimgraben . This Leimgraben is almost 2.0 km long and begins in the district of Pfändhausen , about 700 meters northeast of the town center (near the county road to Rannungen) at less than 365  m above sea level. NN .

On the Eltingshausen sheet of land surveying in Bavaria from 1844, the Augraben valley section above the Aubrunnens is dry; However , the historical map shows a large section of the left upper reaches of the Augraben, known there as the Leim Graben . The Augraben was expanded as a drainage ditch in the 1930s; its two upper reaches are ditches almost everywhere.

course

The Wern initially flows in a southerly direction and approaches the Main near Schweinfurt up to about two kilometers. Then it turns west and flows through the northern part of the Main Triangle . After it has again approached the Main within about two kilometers near Karlstadt- Stetten, it changes direction here too and continues to flow north. At Gemünden - Wernfeld the Wern finally flows out at an altitude of 152  m above sea level. NN in the Main .

The Wern has only a slight gradient on the upper reaches. The previously heavily meandering course of the river was straightened up to Arnstein in the 1930s by the Reich Labor Service in order to gain additional agricultural land. They are now trying to reverse this for nature conservation reasons and to protect against flooding.

Localities

The localities on the Wern include (viewed downstream):

The Wern is the namesake of the Intercommunal Alliance Upper Werntal .

Water flow

The Main Triangle is one of the least rainy areas in Germany. In its northeastern part in particular, precipitation amounts to less than 600 mm over the year. The discharge of the catchment area is therefore extremely low at 4.3 l / s km². The Wern often has very little water, and the water quality is very poor (mostly grade II to III); However, it has improved significantly after 2010 due to the construction of new sewage treatment plants and renaturation measures.

fauna

Grayling , brown trout , brook loach , barbel , bream , minnow , gable , gudgeon , hazel , rainbow trout , roach , eel , aitel and tench are found in the Wern .
