In conversation and arguing who wants to break up with whom first, Joy plays the one -armed bandit . Jack takes Joy's last coin there, which he plays with and wins the jackpot of three million dollars. After the casino presents the couple with the check, Jack explains to them that he won the $ 3 million. Joy scornfully points out the wedding ring and reminds him that she is married to him. The couple argue over the money and a legal battle ensues. The judge sentenced the couple to a six-month forced marriage, while a marriage counselor had weekly meetings to monitor whether enough efforts were made to save the marriage. Joy and Jack reluctantly agree to split the money in half afterwards. Until then, the judge has frozen the profit.

The couple live together in New York City in Jack's apartment, which Joy finds very dirty when they move in, and they are preparing for the next six months. At the beginning of the time the two share the apartment, they mock each other. She cleans and teaches Jack how to fold the toilet seat up and down again, whereupon he takes it off. After Joy locks herself in the bathroom for a long time, Jack also opens the door. Both Jack and Joy learn from their friends that if the other does not try to work for a functioning marriage, that person's money will be withdrawn. To achieve this, Joy tries to animate Jack to fling by sending him as many female acquaintances as possible into the shared apartment, which are then supposed to seduce him. Jack falls for it first and invites his friend "Hater" over to him. He sees through Joy's plan and warns Jack, who in turn calls his acquaintances into his apartment. A wild party breaks out and Joy retires to the toilet to rest. There she meets Jack, who offers her a beer. Here they talk to each other for the first time since moving in without arguing, until Jack makes the ring of Joy's ex-fiance Mason the topic. Since she's still wearing it, Jack concludes that she still loves him. Outraged, Joy takes off the ring and places it under a box on the bathroom shelf.

The next day Jack comes home and unexpectedly meets his parents. Joy invited her to dinner without Jack's knowledge. They have no idea of the fake marriage, but Joy threatens Jack to tell them everything if Jack doesn't put the bathroom door and toilet seat back on. When Jack's friend "Hater" finds out about it, he is furious and encourages Jack to get back at his wife. The ring comes back to Jack's mind, whereupon he meets up with Joy's ex-fiancé and cleverly gets him to woo her again. Over time, Joy becomes friends with Jack's family and Jack, in turn, impresses Banger, his wife's boss, on a closed weekend. Towards the end of the six-month forced marriage, Joy and Jack get closer and closer.

When Joy is on the way to the courtroom, she meets her ex-fiancé Mason again, who wants to give her the ring back and have her back. She is surprised that Mason owns the ring and realizes how it came about. Joy sees her growing feelings for Jack hurt. During the retrial after six months, she foregoes her share of the jackpot in favor of the divorce and gives Jack the ring that she previously received from Mason. She quits the job shortly after when she is about to be promoted and isolates herself. Meanwhile, Jack's friends celebrate the victory. But Jack is unhappy and realizes that he has feelings for Joy. He looks for Joy's friend "Tipper", who would like to help him, but does not know where Joy is. Jack remembers the image of the beach and the lighthouse that Joy heard and which he found under the bed. He sets off and finds Joy on the beach. He realizes that the time in which Joy lived in his apartment was the most beautiful of his life and makes her another marriage proposal. Joy says she has spent her life trying to please everyone. That changed when she was with Jack. Finally she accepts the request. At the end, a flashback shows the marriage that took place in Las Vegas.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that in a few years no one would remember the film. It's sad, but the nicest thing he can say about the film is that he doesn't hate it - which is already something (“Sadly, about the nicest thing I can say about What Happens in Vegas is that I didn ' t hate it - although I suppose that's something ").

Joe Leydon wrote in Variety magazine on May 5, 2008 that the film did not offer any major surprises, just a few unexpected developments. A “respectable” number of laughs would come from a formulaic script. The main characters would appear "undeniably attractive".

On May 12, 2008, Wolfgang Huebner wrote for Stern magazine that the film offered “a few laughs”, but no surprises. He was "only entertainment cinema from the illusion factory, intended for immediate, absolutely free consumption". Its design - "loud, garish and constantly over-the-top" - aims "clearly at a fairly undemanding young mass audience" who would not expect any "subtle screen experiences". Participation means a step backwards for Cameron Diaz, who "was recently seen in more demanding roles" and also "a little too old" for Ashton Kutcher.

Awards

Ashton Kutcher and the film in the romantic comedy category each won the Teen Choice Award in 2008 . Cameron Diaz was nominated for the same award. Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher were also nominated for the Golden Raspberry as worst screen couple. In 2009 the film again won the Teen Choice Award in the Choice Movie: Bromantic Comedy category .
