William Temple

William Temple (born February 28, 1814 in Queen Anne's County , Maryland , † May 28, 1863 in Smyrna , Delaware ) was an American trader and politician . He was a member of the Whig Party and later joined the Democratic Party .

Life

William Temple graduated from high school in Maryland and then moved to Smyrna, Delaware, where he embarked on a commercial career. In 1844 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware , from 1845 to 1854 then a member of the Delaware Senate . He was President when Governor Joseph Maull died on May 3, 1846. Like Maull himself after the death of his predecessor Thomas Stockton , Temple now had to move up to the highest office in the state, which he held until January 19, 1847.

William Temple was later elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington . Before he could officially take up his mandate, however, he died. The Republican Nathaniel B. Smithers won the by-election for the seat .
