Winsen (Aller) is a municipality in the district of Celle in Lower Saxony . The community has 13,270 inhabitants and is located on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath , on the banks of the Aller , a little west of the tributary of the Örtze .

The community consists of the villages of Winsen, Bannetze , Meißendorf , Stedden , Südwinsen , Thören , Walle and Wolthausen .

history

The name of the community comes from Wynhausen ( Wyn , "pasture land"). The Winser Church is dedicated to John the Baptist. Since all the places with churches named after this patron saint were built around the year 800, Winsen's origin is believed to have been around this time.

Today Winsen is a popular local recreation and holiday area, from 1975 to 2010 Winsen was a state-recognized health resort.

Incorporations

On February 1, 1971, the municipalities of Bannetze, Meißendorf, Stedden, Südwinsen, Thören, Walle and Wolthausen were incorporated.

The full-time mayor of the municipality of Winsen (Aller) has been Dirk Oelmann (SPD) since 2011. In the runoff election for the mayoral election on February 27, 2011, he prevailed against his competitor Albrecht Hoppenstedt with 50.7% of the votes. In the mayoral election on October 21, 2018, he was confirmed in his office with 56.5% of the votes, while he won the election against Florian Hemme (CDU, 43.5%). He will start his second term in 2019, which will run until 2026.

• The Meißendorfer Teiche nature and bird sanctuary , with a total area of ​​815 hectares and 350 hectares of water, is the largest water landscape on the Lüneburg Heath.
• The Museumshof Winsen shows a rural courtyard in the Südheide with buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Century and "Dat groode Hus", a farmhouse from 1795, today the cultural center of the community.
• The earliest verifiable Winser Müller is recorded in 1589. Today's post mill was rebuilt in 1732 and operated until it was closed in 1929. It became the property of the municipality in 1938.

• The Junker Gate is one of the oldest surviving architectural monuments in Winsen. It used to allow access to the manor . From 1691 to 1729 the Stechinelli family was enfeoffed with the estate, which is why it is also called the Stechinelli Gate, whose family coat of arms is on the left gate column. The gate itself can be found in the coat of arms of the municipality of Winsen.
• The Prinzensteine are located on a path between Winsen and Oldau and are a reminder of a decisive battle on May 28, 1388 in the War of the Lüneburg Succession . According to legend, two princes were fatally injured at this point before they recognized each other as brothers.
• Today's town hall was initially built as an official building in 1727, but had to be demolished again due to insufficiently secured subsoil. It was then rebuilt in the baroque style. On May 4, 1972, the former office building, which had meanwhile been used by a family of innkeepers, was given its new use as the town hall.
• The Hotel zur Post was built in Winsen in 1648 and previously served as a relay station for stagecoaches . At the end of 2013, the hotel was demolished despite considerable public protests (due to changes in the appearance of the town) in order to make room for the new building of the local savings bank from 2014.
• Since 2012, the German Knighthood Championships have been held every year on the last full weekend in May on the Allerwiesen . The event took place in Hermannsburg until then .
• The Fallschirmsportverein Hannover eV operates a jump area on the K63 between Winsen and Meißendorf.

Economy and Infrastructure

The easternmost village Wolthausen is on the federal highway 3 between Celle and Bergen . The state road 180 leads west to the junction Raststätte Allertal , A 7 and to Celle in the southeast. The L 298 leads north to the B3 in Bergen and south to the B 214 and L 310 (Celle– A7– Mellendorf).

CeBus bus routes open up the villages of Winsen and connect Winsen with Wietze , Hambühren , Bergen and Celle. The missing rail transport network in Winsen can be reached via the bus connections to Celle train station .

The Aller is used for sport shipping and in the summer months for tourist passenger shipping, which goes to towns in Winsen and Celle.
