Ystad [ ˈʏstɐ ] or [ ˈyːˌstɑːdʰ ] (German, obsolete: Ystadt , Danish, obsolete: Ysted ) is a town in the southern Swedish province of Skåne län and the historic province of Skåne on the Swedish south coast. The city is the capital of the municipality of the same name .

geography

The Järavall , a ridge of stone and gravel, stretches from Ystad along the coast to Trelleborg and Falsterbo . He is said to be the "Iöravalla" mentioned in the Völuspá (verse 14).

history

The Danish name Ysted was first mentioned in the Lunder Annalen in 1244 , but the urban area was settled earlier. The origins of the city's main church, the Sankt-Marien-Kirche (Sankta Maria kyrka) , date back to the beginning of the 13th century. Founded in 1258 Greyfriars Abbey of Franciscan (Gråbröderklostret) St. Peter is one of the best preserved medieval monasteries in Sweden and now houses the town museum. Many half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved in the old town. The economic basis for the development of the town were the fishing and trading with herring , whose presence in the southern Baltic Sea in the late Middle Ages enormous proportions had, but suddenly drastically decreased by 1500th

The Ystad Art Museum was founded in 1936 .

From Ystad there are ferry connections to the Danish island of Bornholm and with Polferries to Świnoujście (Swinoujscie) in Poland . Ystad is a stop on the Malmö - Tomelilla - Simrishamn railway line , which also offers direct connections to Copenhagen to connect the Bornholm ferry with the capital and the Danish rail network. There is also a bus connection to the port city of Trelleborg , from where there are ferry connections to Świnoujście, Rostock and Lübeck-Travemünde .

Bicycle traffic

Ystad is connected to several national and international long-distance cycle routes, including the Baltic Sea Cycle Route , which as the European EuroVelo route EV 10 circles the entire Baltic Sea.

Ystad as a place of pilgrimage for crime fans

Ystad became known throughout Europe through the detective novels by Henning Mankell with commissioner Kurt Wallander as the fictional protagonist. All the squares, streets and restaurants mentioned in the books exist in reality, such as Wallander's house at Mariagatan 10, a simple building made of red brick. For this reason, Ystad became a popular pilgrimage site for Mankell readers in the early 1990s. The film adaptations of the Kurt Wallander novels, some of which were shot at the "original locations" in Ystad, also contributed significantly to the popularity. Most of the exhibits in the visitor center of the Ystad film studios are dedicated to this topic .

Buildings

The Sankt-Marien-Kirche is located in the center of the city . To the east of this is the old town hall . In the northern part of the old town is the Ystad Monastery , which is now used as a museum . Another museum worth mentioning is the Ystad Art Museum .
