The Zenger (also: Szenger , Czenger , Tschenger , Tzenger ) were a widespread Bavarian aristocratic family from the 12th to 17th centuries with extensive possessions in the Upper Palatinate and Lower Bavaria.

Zenger headquarters

There are different opinions about the headquarters of the Zenger. If one assumes for Zangenstein Castle that Zangenstein Castle , built in the 14th century by Otto Zenger, had a forerunner castle for which Otto von Zangenstein was mentioned in 1099, this can be considered as the original ancestral seat.

The fortress Nabburg already existed in the 11th century. It could be used as an ancestral home for the Zengers.

Fronhof Castle , which was mentioned in the oldest Leuchtenberg fief book written towards the end of the 14th century, assumes a different opinion as the ancestral seat of the Zenger. In 1308 Heinrich V. (93) Zenger, 1356, 1360 and 1363 Friedrich (97) Zenger, 1359 and 1396 Jordan IV (104) Zenger, 1377 and 1378 Andre Zenger and 1383 and 1388 Allt Zenger sat on Fronhof.

coat of arms

Blacksmiths' tongs are characteristic of the Zenger coats of arms. The coat of arms is divided into two parts. In the upper field the pliers, the lower field golden. The shield is adorned with one or two crowned helmets, eagle wings with pincers and sometimes with a male with a tongue out. The blacksmith's tongs appear partly in the coats of arms of the former possessions and castles of the Zenger. The coat of arms of the Zenger is also on the Isartor in Munich . All the coats of arms of the knights who fought on the side of Ludwig of Bavaria in the Battle of Ampfing in 1322 were attached to the Isartor .

history

The history of the Zenger family is closely intertwined with the history of many localities in Upper Palatinate from the 12th to the 16th century. Starting with Conrad I (1) around 1271, the family flourished quickly and had over 80 family members in the 14th century, and around 70 in the 15th century, then declined fairly quickly in the 16th century and died out at the beginning of the 17th century. Century. Many members of the Zenger sex were characterized by great drive, courage, willingness to take risks and the constant energetic endeavor to increase their property. Some Zengers successfully participated in battles and were honored for this by the rulers.

Some Zengers became

  • Burgmannen : Otto I. (3), Heinrich I. (6)
  • Ritter : Marquart (12), Wolfhart III. zu Nabburg (16), Friedrich zu Trausnitz , Beilstein and Siegenstein (25), Wolfhart V. (27), Hartlieb zu Nabburg (57), Jordan II. zu Rottenstatt (89), Otto V. (118), Heinrich zu Schwarzenek (119), Hans the golden knight zu Ekmühl, Thannstein and Lichtenwald (139), Heinrich zu Schwarzenek and Regenstauf (125), Hans zu Schwarzenek and Zangenstein (132), Parzival zum Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (170), Wolfgang zum Lichtenwald (169 ), Urban, Ritter zu Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (177).

Many zengers attained high offices and became

  • Nurse : Wolfhart I. (4), Ortlieb II. (8), Berthold (17), Wilhelm I. zu Steinberg and zum Haken (18), Wolfhart VI. zu Trausnitz and Zangenfels (30), Hans zum Schwarzenberg and zu Hegling (41), Christoph zum Schwarzenberg (42), Sigmund (52), Parzival zu Schwarzenek (109), Erhard I. zum Lichtenwald and zu Altenthann (144), Jobst II. Zum Thannstein (146), Georg zum Thannstein (147), Jobst III. zum Thannstein (151), Georg zum Schneeberg and zum Thannstein (162), Wolfgang zum Lichtenwald (169), Michael zum Lichtenwald (174), Parzival zum Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (191)
  • Dienstmann : Rüger (15)
  • Judges : Heinrich II. (13), Ulrich (9), Friedrich zu Trausnitz , Beilstein and Siegenstein (25), Heinrich III. zu Veldorf (58), Parzival zu Schwarzenek (109), Heinrich VIII. (105) to the Rotenstatt and zu Forchtenberg, Georg to the Schneeberg and to the Thannstein (162), Hans (175), Urban, Ritter zu Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (177 ), Otto zum Thannstein (156)
  • Councilor : Tristram (53), Georg zu Regenstauf (131), Erhard I. zum Lichtenwald and Altenthann (144), Parzival zum Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (191), Sebastian (189)
  • Burgrave : Otto II of Niedermurach (72)
  • Vizedom : Henry V to Fronhof and Schwarzeneck (93), Hans for Thanstein and Trüftelfing (164) Wiguleus to light woods and Adelmann stone (179)
  • Court Marshal : Berthold (17), Urban, Ritter zu Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (177)
  • Hofmeister : Otto VI. to Kefring (138).

Members of the Zenger always seemed to be there when nobles of the 12th and 13th centuries had to sell their property or give it as a pledge because of their debts. In this way they quickly expanded their possessions and their sphere of influence to include extensive estates and many castles in the Upper Palatinate and adjacent areas in Lower and Upper Bavaria and Franconia . Some Zengers (Wolfhart VI. Zu Trausnitz and Zangenfels (30), Parzival zu Schwarzenek (109), Hans the golden knight) were active in order to cover the debts resulting from the constant acquisitions of castles and lands and out of the joy of fighting and robbery zu Ekmühl, Thannstein and Lichtenwald (139)) as robber barons, without shying away from the resulting conflict with the rulers.

Some zengians chose and became

  • Pastor : Wolfhart IV. (24), Hans (100)
  • Canon : Erhard (28), Wolf (49), Erhard III. (171), Heimeran zu Hettenbach (179), Hans zum Thannstein (154), Rupprecht (194), Wiguleus zu Lichtenwald and Adelmannstein (179), Georg (184)
  • Nuns : Anna (45), Elisabeth (121), Margarethe (o)
  • Canons : Beatrix (29), Barbara (116), Barbara (152)
  • Abbesses : Beatrix (178), Benigna (180)
  • Prioresses : Margareth (56).

In the 16th century in particular, the male Zenger became increasingly concerned with the clergy, which accelerated the extinction of the sex. The Zengers were related to many other important noble families through marriage.

Zenger family tree

The family tree of the Zenger family recorded here and the numbering in brackets used in the article are based on the family tree in Johann Ferdinand Huschberg , The noble family of Zenger, ed. v. F. Hüttner, in: VHVNdb 37, 1901, pp. 1-88. The Zenger, not numbered by Huschberg, are marked with lower case letters in brackets.

Earliest mention of the Zenger (948 to 1238)

The following earliest mentions of the Zengers are uncertain. In 948 a woman Wolfhild Zenger (a) was mentioned who accompanied her husband Jacob von Sandizell to the tournament in Costnitz or Constanz. In 1099 an Otto von Zangenstein (b) was reported to have donated an eternal lamp in the church in Kätzelsdorf . According to written evidence, however, Zangenstein Castle was not founded until the 14th century. Haimeran (c) and Wolfgang Zenger (d) were mentioned for 1230 and Conrad (v) and Otto (w) Zenger for 1238.

Origin of the Zenger

Conrad I. is considered to be the progenitor of the Zenger family. He is the first Zenger who is reliably documented. The sons of Conrad I, Ortlieb I, Wolfhart I and Heinrich I each founded a line. The Ortlieb line died out in the 14th century, the Wolfhart line in the 16th century and the Heinrich line in the 17th century.
