Zorge is a district of the municipality Walkenried in the Harz Mountains in the district of Göttingen in Lower Saxony ( Germany ).

The state-approved climatic health resort covers an area of 2.21 km² and has around 1000 inhabitants .

Geographical location

Zorge is located in the southern Harz in the Harz Nature Park on the Zorge River and runs as an elongated street village parallel to the village of Wieda, which is about 3 km (as the crow flies ) to the west . In a wooded area it lies west of the mountains Großer Staufenberg (approx.  554  m above sea  level ) and Hoheharz (approx.  584  m ) and east of the mountains Jagdkopf ( 603.1  m ) and Eichenberg ( 495.1  m ). The border with Thuringia runs east and south-east of the village .

history

Zorge was first mentioned in a document in 1249 as "Szurgenge". This year monks from the nearby Walkenried monastery had an ore smelter built here. In 1540 ore was processed in iron and copper works, some of the ore was extracted in open-cast mining . The bookseller Eduard Vieweg from Braunschweig had 75 "Columbia-Presse" printing presses manufactured in the Zorge ducal ironworks from 1824 to around 1850 . In the Zorge machine factory , six locomotives were built around 1842 , the first of which was named Zorge . From Ellrich to Zorge a 7.5 km long small railway line ( railway line Ellrich – Zorge ) was built in 1907 , which was used for the last time on April 7, 1945 due to the demarcation of the border.

coat of arms

The design of the coat of arms of Zorge comes from the heraldist and coat of arms painter Gustav Völker , who also designed the coat of arms of Großburgwedel , Mellendorf , Wunstorf and many other localities in the Hanover region . The Zorg Council decided on the coat of arms on January 26, 1955 and again on March 5, 1957 with the approval of the Lower Saxony Minister of the Interior after there had been disagreements about Zorge's wish to be allowed to use the Braunschweig horse in the coat of arms.

Zorge coat of arms
Blazon : "Under a shield head in two rows of red and silver, a silver horse jumps in blue on a green three-mountain top , covered with golden mountain hammers ."
Reasons for the coat of arms: The head of the shield with the chess pattern is the coat of arms of the County of Hohnstein , to which Zorge belonged until it became Brunswick. Mallets and irons are a reminder that copper and iron were mined here in the past. Iron was still being removed until 1896. The Dreiberg symbolizes the Harz , to which Zorge belongs. The place was incorporated into the Osterode district on July 1, 1972 .

traffic

Monument to the Kleinbahn in Zorge

Until 1945 Zorge was connected to the area with the Kleinbahn AG Ellrich-Zorge . However, the zone boundary cut the short small railway, so that it was shut down in 1945. After German reunification in 1990, attempts were made to use the route for a museum railway , but this failed.

Today, Zorge is connected via bus line 470 (Bad Sachsa - Walkenried - Zorge - Hohegeiß - Braunlage), which is operated by the Hahne-Reisen company and runs daily.
