Zwierzyn (German Neu Mecklenburg ) is a village with the seat of a rural community of the same name in the Polish Lebus Voivodeship and belongs to the powiat Strzelecko-Drezdenecki ( Friedeberg-Driesen district ).

Geographical location

Zwierzyn lies on the northern edge of the Netzbruch in the city break of Strzelce Krajeńskie ( Friedeberg (Neumark) ). The voivodship road 156 runs through the village from Strzelce Krajeńskie (5 km) to Drezdenko ( Driesen ), into which a side road from Przylęg ( Altenfließ ) joins on the national road 22 via Górki Notecki ( Gurkow ).

In the village is the railway station Strzelce Krajeńskie Wschod (until 1945 Friedeberg (Neumark) ) on the former Prussian Eastern Railway Line and today's Polish State Railway Line 203 from Kostrzyn nad Odrą ( Küstrin ) to Tczew ( Dirschau ).

Place name

The German place name Neu Mecklenburg results from the establishment of the place through the settlement of working-class families from Mecklenburg . The Polish place name Zwierzyn occurs again in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship in the place Zwierzyn ( Schwerinsfeld ), only 50 straight-line kilometers away.

Village Zwierzyn ( New Mecklenburg )

history

In the middle of the 18th century, the citizens of the town of Friedeberg (Neumark) (today in Polish: Strzelce Krajeńskie) should contribute to the reclamation of the southern urban break. However, this refused. Therefore, in 1765, they had to give up a quarter of their quarry meadows without compensation. New Mecklenburg was founded here with the villages of Grundsaue (Brześcianki) and Zwick. 80 working-class families, most of which came from Mecklenburg , each received four acres of meadow land and were settled in 40 semi-detached houses in the long street village. Johann Martin Müller came from Poland, to whom the Neumühle was transferred.

From 1816 to 1945, Neu Mecklenburg was part of the Friedeberg Nm district. Until 1938 he was part of the administrative district of Frankfurt (Oder) in the Prussian province of Brandenburg . Between 1938 and 1945 it was incorporated into the Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia administrative district and belonged to the Pomeranian Province .

New Mecklenburg formed its own administrative and civil registry district and belonged to the Strzelce Krajeńskie district court area . In 1925 there were 1,009 people living here. Their number rose to 2,085 by 1933 and was 1,110 in 1939.

Neu Mecklenburg has been called Zwierzyn since 1945 and is the seat of Gmina of the same name in the powiat Strzelecko-Drezdenecki in the Lubusz Voivodeship (until 1998 Landsberg Voivodeship ). Today 1,300 people live in the village.

church

The original half-timbered church with a tower was built in 1767. Strzelce Krajeńskie was the patron of the church until 1945 . The village belonged to the parish of Friedeberg (Neumark) in the ecclesiastical province of Brandenburg of the Prussian Union of churches .

For 178 years the church was a Protestant place of worship. After 1945 it was adopted by the Catholic Church in Poland . Between 1990 and 1995 it was walled with bricks and given a west tower in front of it. It now bears the name John the Baptist and is the parish church of the parish of the same name, to which the subsidiary communities Gościmiec ( Gottschimmerbruch ) and Żółwin ( Friedebergschbruch ) belong. It is located in the Strzelce Krajeńskie Dean's Office ( Friedeberg (Neumark) ) in the Grünberg-Landsberg diocese .

Evangelical church members living in Zwierzyn are now cared for by the parish office in Gorzów Wielkopolski ( Landsberg ad Warthe ) in the diocese of Wroclaw of the Evangelical Augsburg Church in Poland .
