How can I tell how many K my article is? (re: Stanley Marcus)

Hello! I am the creator and main editor working on Stanley Marcus and I have a question for you, now that you're reviewing it. I saw that in the fail notice on Gabriel (film) you mentioned that the lead wasn't long enough, and I followed the link to WP:LEAD. It indicates that once an article is 32K in length, the lead should be at least 2 paragraphs long. I'm used to one-paragraph leads and was trying to be concise when I extended it at the suggestion of the lone peer reviewer. How can I tell whether it's 32K, and therefore needs a longer lead? This is the first time I've tried to get an article up to GA on my own, though I contributed to Byron Nelson heavily as various editors were working to get it up to that level. (There's a list on my user page of the articles I've created to date.) I'll also be interested in the feedback to help me decide what to add next of the some 200 pages of material I've got in a Word file, as I find the sheer mass overwhelms my ability to decide where to start adding! At the very least, you can be sure this won't be one of the articles where the editor doesn't read the suggestions and get to work; even since the nomination, I've checked nearly every day and even tried to find an article on the GAN list that I felt able to review in order to help slog through the backlog. Maybe soon I'll find one. Lawikitejana (talk) 23:48, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you saw, I've started on the work. I found my copy of Minding the Store and will see if any of the unsourced points come from it (I already looked in several electronic clippings files). I'm still working on how to expand the lead, writing-wise. I hear you that there needs to be more about his career vs. so much about the awards. Incidentally, can I keep the Advertising HOF quote up there if I add a paragraph later in the article discussing the award? The lead is in the style of leads I've liked in other GAs and in FAs, albeit skimpier — not an attempt to lionize or trumpet him, but a sense of why he's notable. Are there specific biographical articles that you think of as models for the lead? I'll try looking for GAs and FAs that I could compare to. Lawikitejana (talk) 13:28, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just to let you know I'm not quite done. It's finals week at the school where I teach, so I've been stretched a little thin. However, I am working on fixing up the lead. I'd still welcome models if you've seen any.Lawikitejana (talk) 23:03, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at leads of some GA and FA biography articles, and FWIW, found several with quotes in the lead. That doesn't automatically mean my quote should stay, of course, but I thought you'd be interested. (FA examples: Glynn Lunney, Marjory Stoneman Douglas (shorter quote), Harold Innis; GA examples: Mary McLeod Bethune, Charles M. Loring) Thanks for your note about the hold.Lawikitejana (talk) 22:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Still don't yet give up ... I turn in my students' grades tomorrow and then will have plenty of time to finish re-editing the lead (!). Lawikitejana (talk) 01:43, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Writer's block is setting in. I liked your suggestion "After looking through a bunch of those, I think the lead should be formatted like this: a paragraph explaining who he is, a paragraph summarizing his life and career, and a paragraph summarizing why he is so great. What do you think? Nikki311 22:36, 31 May 2008 (UTC)" but I can't seem to figure out how to actually do it. However, I certainly don't want the article failed. What to do? Lawikitejana (talk) 01:45, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I removed that one last uncited sentence. I'd still love for you to punch up the lead if you have an idea, but other than that, we should be good to go. Just let me know!Lawikitejana (talk) 21:34, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
One last question... I have my preferences set to show me at the top of each article whether it's stub-class, start, B, good, featured, etc. For some reason, the Stanley Marcus article still shows there as B-class. Any idea why? I checked other GAs, and they all say "A good article from Wikipedia." ?? Lawikitejana (talk) 20:15, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pardon me

I just opened your MySpace - I didn't realize you were 21. I always got the impression that everyone else in WP:PW was 14 years old. --Endless Dan 20:12, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Cowboycaleb1234567 is taunting D.M.N., and I know he's a sockpuppet of some banned user with a vendetta against D.M.N., though it doesn't appear to be the actual User:Cowboycaleb. Oh, and how have you been? It's been a long time, Nikki. Cheers, -The Hybrid- 05:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, since you're off, I'll go to AIV. Still, I'm interested in how you've been. Cheers, -The Hybrid- 06:03, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jury duty: bleh! That sucks. Well, I'm thinking about finding a new job. The politics at my current job has evolved to a creature beyond what I can tolerate. However, this means that I am probably going to be taking a considerable pay cut, in addition to going back to the bottom of the ladder again. If I can find a transfer within my company I will give that a try, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Cheers, -The Hybrid- 05:42, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA Nomination for Nhat Hanh

Thank you for your suggestions to improve the article about Thich Nhat Hanh. Even though I've done a lot of work on the article in the past and keep an eye on it regularly, I didn't make the nomination for GA status because I was aware there were details that need to be cleaned up, but haven't had time to make them. Seems like when a person nominates an article, they should follow through, but that didn't happen in this case. At any rate, I now have a very good to-do list for improvement to the article, and I appreciate you taking the time to read it and make the suggestions. Hopefully, things will settle down soon and I'll be able to make the improvements you've suggested. Thanks again! Nightngle (talk) 13:31, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As per your comments on the GA candidacy of Jacques Brel is etc...

Hello! I took your comments on the WP:GA candidacy of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (film) to heart and expanded the article to include a plot section. This is a bit tricky, since the film is plotless. Please let me know if you feel it needs more info. Many thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 23:54, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since no one else has commented in the peer review of Backlash (2003), do you have any comments to add to the peer review, if not, may you copy-edit it? Thanks Nikki. --SRX 00:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Me? Oh, that is a nice invitation. But I've never done Peer Review. What I am supposed to do? (If possible, please reply to my Talk Page). Thanks! Ecoleetage (talk) 12:46, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ISBNs

In your recent review of the article Nhat Hanh, you listed among items requiring attention: "Some of the books in the Bibliography and further reading don't have isbn numbers. Is this because they don't have them? They also need their authors listed. See Template:cite book."

Per the guideline Wikipedia:CITE#FULL ("a generally accepted standard that editors should follow"):

"All citation techniques require detailed full citations to be provided for each source used. Full citations must contain enough information for other editors to identify the specific published work you used.

Full citations for books typically include: the name of the author, the title of the book or article, the date of publication, and page numbers. The name of the publisher, city of publication, and ISBN are optional, although publisher is generally required for featured articles."

Your sandbox

I just saw your comments on the WP:PW talk page about changing the formatting of pro wrestling results to a table and I hope you don't mind, but I edited your sandbox to add an additional kind of box you could consider instead of the one that was being used. Additionally I left a comment at WP:PW's talk page about it. Cheers! — Κaiba 00:15, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review of Palace of Westminster

Thanks for your review, the comments are definitely useful, especially as we are aiming for FAC at some point but I have to question some of your rationale, based on my understanding of GA criteria:

  • There are entire sections and paragraphs without in-line citations. Please provide them to increase verifiability.
GAC requires citations for quotations, statistics, and controversial material, but doesn't require them for every paragraph?
  • All the pictures are located on the right-hand side of the article. Can't some of them be moved to the left, so it looks more balanced?
I'll certainly take a look at this, but again is it reason to fail GA?
  • There are several one or two sentence paragraphs. Merge these with the surrounding paragraphs or expand them.
This seems fair enough under WP:LAYOUT.
  • The citations in the references need to be formatted with Template:cite web.
Again this doesn't seem to fall under GA criteria - there's no mention of the format required for citations.
  • Format all numbers + words with . Ex: 70 meters
I'm not sure what you mean by this - I know we recently updated measurements to have consistency of units but could you clarify this point please?

In short, I'm a little disappointed - if the bar is higher for GA then I thought, then fair enough, but I did think we were pretty much there. Paulbrock (talk) 13:27, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nikki. Could you possibly move Great American Bash (2008) to The Great American Bash (2008) as that is the official name of the PPV. The Great American Bash (2008) page will need deleted first as it is a redirect, admins can only do that, hence why I'm asking you. Thanks, D.M.N. (talk) 21:26, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Different category, but can you delete Template:Infobox wrestling draft, remember how you recommended it, but people seemed to disagree with it, and its not in use anywhere so may you delete it?--SRX--LatinoHeat 22:25, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done and done. Nikki311 23:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for moving Great American Bash 08. I created it last night and when I was trying to it wouldn't take the name The Great American Bash (2008). I never could get the link to go red so I could make it. It just kept taking me to WWE Great American Bash.--WillC (talk) 23:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well good thing I didn't try to do it then. I would have never done it. Well thanks, I didn't know who to ask to make it The Great American Bash so I just left until somebody moved it.--WillC (talk) 23:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Nikki for deleting it.SRX--LatinoHeat 00:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! remember me? Yeah I noticed that Survivor Series (2008) wasn't made so I tried to make it because it would need to be made in the future and the date and venue was known so I just went a head and tried. Well there must be a redirect for Survivor Series 2008 and it wouldn't let me make it. So I made WWE Survivor Series (2008). Could you please delete the redirect and move it to Survivor Series (2008) because only admins can do that. Well that is what you told me.----WillC-- 02:52, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Culture of Georgia (U.S. state)

Hey Nikki,

How are you? I was wondering if you wouldn't mind checking out the Culture of Georgia (U.S. state) article and seeing if you thought it's reached the point where it might be a B article? If not, what else do you think needs to be done? I've went in recently and expanded the sections on People, Religion and Cuisine a little bit, along with inline citations where necessary. I do know that the Southern dialect section and the Timber section could probably use a little more work. But, finding decent online references has been pretty difficult. Anyways, if you could give it a once over it'd be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Reb (talk) 12:13, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Lockdown 08

Okay thanks. I've had a little help on the background and other stuff but I mainly wrote the whole thing. That was the first one I ever wrote so it is probably sloppy. I still have a little more to do on it. I didn't read over it but once. I've been trying to get Sacrifice (2008), Slammiversary (2008), and Destination X (2008) all done. I want TNA articles to be just as important as WWE's. I a wait for the fed back.--WillC 23:53, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thanks. Just for you to know I suck at reports. English is my worse subject. The only reason I even wrote it was to try. I wasn't going to let my incapability stop me from making the article. The reason I described the match was I was coping from Victory Road (2004) and it described the match so I thought I had to describe the match. Now I know different. I don't know why but I've always spelled later like latter. I never have understood where I started thinking it was spelled with two "t". But thanks. I feel like a idiot now seeing all the things you changed. But at least I know now, before I screw up more articles. Thank you very much.--WillC 23:03, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You said something about the Background and Aftermath being too long. That they were longer than the event. Well is this around the size of what the Aftermath should look like? here--WillC 23:29, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi!, me again. I was wondering if you could do me a favor. I have perfected Lockdown 2008 in my sandbox. I've added references and rewrote the event section. I'm almost done with the event section and was wondering if you could read the article and tell me if it is any better and if it is ready to go through the process of nomination for GA status? Here.--WillC 22:57, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm about to read over it again and see if there was anything I missed that should be fixed. Hopefully I can get it nominated for GA soon. I was thinking about doing a peer review.--WillC 06:23, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nikki. Could you block the above IP for about a week. Looking at the contributions of the IP, it's very clear that its being used by blocked sockpuppet Cowboycaleb1. Thanks, D.M.N. (talk) 07:36, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. Done. I remember him doing that before. Nikki311 22:27, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you semi-protect the page for 5 days? D.M.N. requested it, but the reviewer said no, but just look at the history. -- iMatthew T.C. 19:43, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind! Cheers, -- iMatthew T.C. 19:48, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thank You so much. That means a lot from you too, I know the Featured criteria is tightened up. --SRX--LatinoHeat 19:59, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nikki,

I have addressed all of your suggestions for this article. Hope they're to your satisfaction, and thanks for the input. --Figureskatingfan (talk) 05:23, 1 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the pass. Now on to FA! Hopefully, it'll be easier than my last attempt, The Wiggles, which took four nominations. --Figureskatingfan (talk) 04:00, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PR experiment

Dear Nikki311, I'm writing in hopes of enlisting your aid in a four-month experiment at Peer Review (PR). The success of the experiment will depend on finding at least 10 editors willing to review at least one article a week through the end of October 2008. The experiment will employ a streamlined review process designed to insure that every nominator who seeks a review gets one and that reviewers do not waste time doing long reviews for nominators who do not respond to an initial short review.

The way it works is this: (1) Choose any article at Peer Review that lacks a review. Wikipedia:Peer reviews by date, especially the backlog list, is still a good place to find such articles. (2) Provide a short partial review based on your initial observations and wait to see if the nominator responds. Examples of short reviews can be found at Wikipedia:Peer review/Foreign relations of India/archive1 and Wikipedia:Peer review/Ed Stelmach/archive1. (3) If the nominator does not respond, the review is done. (4) If the nominator responds, continue the review as you see fit.

The experiment will require no noticeable administration. However, if you plan to participate, it would be helpful if you posted a brief note to Wikipedia talk:Peer review to that effect.

At the end of October, we can see how the experiment turned out and whether this process or some modification of it could sustain Peer Review permanently with minimal backlogs. If you can help, that would be great. If not, that's perfectly OK. We are all tremendously busy with a lot of different projects.

I have chosen to write to you in part because you've done peer reviews from the backlog during the past four months. Please forgive the form-letter nature of this note, which is more efficient than a personal note. With respect and thanks for your hard work on many projects, Finetooth (talk) 05:36, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nikki, I just wanted to let you know that I placed Maria Kanellis on hold. -- iMatthew T.C. 13:25, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And let me know if any issues come up with the review. -- iMatthew T.C. 00:00, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From the Editors

As I'm sure you noticed above, this is the 20th edition of the WikiProject Professional wrestling newsletter! It has come a long way since the first issue, and I'm sure it will only improve from here. I'd like to thank everyone reading this for continuing to read the newsletter, biweekly.

I'd like to especially thank those who have helped to get the newsletter to it's 20th edition; The Hybrid, The Chronic, TJ Spyke, Alex Roggio, LAX, ThinkBlue, Nikki311, GaryColemanFan, Gavyn Sykes, D.M.N., Naha, NiciVampireHeart, SRX, Zenlax and, RkOrton.

Also, lastly I'd like to thank Misza13, for sending the newsletter out for us, though his bot. His bot has to be the most important part of the process, because without it, the newsletter would not get sent to project members.

I know that's a long list, but they all deserve recognition for their hard work towards the newsletter. So again, thank you to that list of people, and thank you to all of the newsletter's biweekly readers. If you have an questions, comments, or feedback about the newsletter, remember those links below.

Well done! I find it a good thing that both were WP:PW members - the other was ThinkBlue (talk · contribs). Again - well done! =D D.M.N. (talk) 18:29, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, could you possibly look at the prose in December to Dismember (2006) and give it a bit of a copy-edit? Thanks, D.M.N. (talk) 19:46, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Nikki311 16:08, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Hey, Insane Clown Posse is up for FA and since its part of the WP:PW project, should it be mentioned in the project page? --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 18:59, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I was gonna mention it, but I wasn't sure. It looks like the article might have a chance at passing..... Let's hope it does. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 19:04, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May you copyedit the lead of List of tallest buildings in Washington, D.C.? --SRX--LatinoHeat 18:13, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If it's no bother, may you copy-edit SummerSlam (2003)? Thanks.--SRX 03:40, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Nikki311 16:31, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reminder. I've been busy getting ready for and actually moving that I forgot about it. I failed the article since the history shows no changes at all. Imzadi1979 (talk) 01:13, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

HI again

Hi!, it has been a while hasn't? Well I'm here to ask if it isn't a bother (I don't like to ask favors) would you mind to read Lockdown (2008) one more time. Because the peer review ends Sunday. Then it goes on the waiting list for a little bit. So a GA review is coming up soon. Alot has been changed in it since you last read it. So I would like to know if you think it will make GA?--WillC 04:45, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for reading, what did you think? Do you think it will pass it's GA Nomination in a week?--WillC 22:05, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, do you think that it will make GA? Also when did PWtorch become unreliable?--WillC 02:07, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OH, okay. Yeah I'll answer anything the reviewer says. I've got it this far and I don't plan on it failing.--WillC 02:15, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nikki!

Do you have time to copyedit an article I created today? -- iMatthew T.C. 00:18, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If by any chance you are online tonight, and can copyedit the article, it is Armageddon 2006, and is located in one of my sandboxes. I probably will not be on until tomorrow morning. Cheers! -- iMatthew T.C. 01:25, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and I've seen the thread, but I was under the understanding that it was not mandatory anymore, not that it is now against policy. I really disagree with that new policy, because I am so used to linking the dates. Also, those sentences were basically just a way to move from the start of the match to the end of the match, but they really annoyed me, and if you hadn't removed them, I probably would have. Thanks, Nikki! -- iMatthew T.C. 12:00, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have one more article for the Coyedit Queen, lol. Can you copedit 2008 WWE Draft for me, please? -- iMatthew T.C. 15:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you and I should get started on getting on of the Diva's articles to FA...what do you think? -- iMatthew T.C. 18:18, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well we don't have to have every Diva that ever was a Diva. If you know what I mean. If the have a featured topic, can you add articles to it, after it passes? -- iMatthew T.C. 21:38, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I have so much going on right now, so I'd be happy to help, but not for a little while, when I get at least one of my projects done. -- iMatthew T.C. 21:39, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I really think that the info. about Survivor Series '03 and Armageddon '03 are pointless to have on Shawn Michaels' article. What do you think? --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 03:43, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, all the refs. that were in the article were replaced with the "reliable" sources, but what should be done for "Wrestling Information Archive" in the article? --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 21:36, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To tell you the truth, I don't really know what issues they are. I've done Google searches, but have come out empty. If info. were available about them, I would cite them, but I don't know. --  ThinkBlue  (Hit BLUE) 22:20, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA Arden Valley Road

It seems that you were right about a lack of interest. As the article is not yet o Good Article standard, I think that the article can be safely failed. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. J.T Pearson (talk) 18:20, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Question

Hey Nikki. You put that the fact that Slam! Wrestling put on their website that Ashley Massaro was granted a release from the WWE because of her sick daughter. My question is how is that truly reliable when they give the source as her Myspace that she has recently changed to a sick family member instead of a daughter.I just would feel comfortable another source other than her Myspace, that's all.(MgTurtle (talk) 02:20, 17 July 2008 (UTC)).[reply]

Hi! I just wanted to quickly say thanks for your review of Belldandy, and especially for the help fixing some of the problems with the article. Both were much appreciated, and I'm thrilled that it passed. :) Thanks heaps! - Bilby (talk) 00:49, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking a look at the article. I've made the changes you requested. Feel free to take a look at it, and thanks again! JKBrooks85 (talk) 07:38, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info about switching the ref order. Good to know. JKBrooks85 (talk) 00:06, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Teddy D

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately, it doesn't have exactly what I want. I need it to cite his son's birthdate. (I can't find it anywhere else). An editor saw the date mentioned in the book at a bookstore, but doesn't know the page number. Could I just cite the actual book, and not put in a page number? ♥NiciVampireHeart♥ 08:19, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lipstick and Dynamite, Piss and Vinegar: The First Ladies of Wrestling

Updated DYK query On 20 July, 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Lipstick and Dynamite, Piss and Vinegar: The First Ladies of Wrestling, which you created or substantially expanded. Do You Know?

Do you know of a reliable review source that gives reception to PPV events, I am trying to find it for SummerSlam (2003), so I can nominate it for FAC in the future now that it has no jargon and is out of universe and has reliable sources, or is it okay with just SLAM Sports and the grossing of the event?--SRX 18:54, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
