Trivia
General
* At the time the show was filmed and broadcast, same-sex marriage was not legally recognized anywhere in the United States. Reichen and Chip were never legally married under U.S. law, though they were married in a religious ceremony; CBS decided to honor their description of themselves as "married" for the purposes of the show.
* A record seven Fast Forwards were handed out (including the first five legs of the race), only one of which was sought by more than one team.
* At six (aired), Tian holds the record for most Roadblock tasks performed by a contestant whose teammate did not perform any.
* Although they are the third team overall not to finish a leg in first place immediately following the Fast Forward, the NFL Wives (Monica and Sheree) are the first team to use it and finish neither first nor last. They finished in fourth.
* This Season had the most number of teams that have been first place. Nine of the 12 teams that competed in this season placed first at least once.
* Only two new countries were visited on this Race: the Netherlands and South Korea.

Pre-Race
* Redundant names were a theme in this edition of the Race. There were 3 Steves, 2 Jons, a David and a Dave, and a Sheree and a Jaree. In addition, this is the second season to feature a Cindy ("Cyndi" on season 2) and a Russell on the same team.

In-Race
*In Leg 3, teams received $480 for this race.
* Leg 4 marked the first time ever in The Amazing Race that a Roadblock took place before a Detour.
* Reichen and Chip were not planning on taking the Fast Forward task in the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary in Leg 9. However, since they had unintentionally traveled in that direction, they decided to complete the route. Jon and Kelly were trying for the green pass (color of the Fast Forward indicator) but had to go back to complete the Detour and the Roadblock, barely beating out Chuck and Millie for a final four berth.
* On Leg 11, Jon and Al attempted to get on the same flight as the other teams, but their Race-provided credit card was not accepted by the airline due to computer problems, and they were unable to make that flight. As this was an airline issue that production could not control, the production teams held up the three other teams when they arrived in Australia to make up for the time lost in resolving the card issue, and thus appearing to have all teams equally bunched out of the airport. However, Jon and Al still arrived last in the leg and were eliminated.
* On Leg 13, David and Jeff made a mistake in flying into Sydney to get flights to Hawaii. There were none until the next day, which put them so far behind that they did not reach the Finish Line. This is the second time this a team hasn't crossed the finish line, the first time being Joe and Bill in season 1.
*Three legs had 36 hour Pit Stops, which occurred after Leg 3 in Gmunden, Austria; Leg 5 in Muiden, Netherlands; and Leg 7 in Alleppey, India. There were also two 24 hour Pit Stops, after Leg 9 in Sepilok, Malaysia and after Leg 11 in Brisbane, Australia.
* Steve and Josh, placing ninth are the lowest placing team to ever win a leg twice.

Post-Race
* After the race, Reichen & Chip "divorced" but still remained friends.
* After winning Reichen started a career in modeling, selling his own semi-nude annual calendar. He hosted "The Reichen Show" on the now-defunct Q Television and was a contestant on "Reality Stars Fear Factor," finishing in sixth/fifth place.
* Chip became active in gay-related charity and advocacy groups, and appeared on the 2005 reality "reunion show" Real Gay on Logo.
* In July, 2006, Lance Bass announced that Reichen and he were in a long-term relationship. On December 4, 2006, People magazine reported that they had split.
* This was the last season where ties were allowed at the mat (and the subsequent distribution of additional first place prizes should there be a tie for first place). In subsequent seasons, even if teams arrived at the mat at the same time, an order would be determined, and the official check in times for teams arriving simultaneously would set a minute apart to avoid tying situations.
* This is one of three seasons not to be represented by at least one team on Amazing Race All-Stars. Kelly & Jon were supposed to represent Season 4 but backed out at the last minute.

The Amazing Race 4 is the fourth season of the American reality competition show The Amazing Race. Hosted by Phil Keoghan, it featured twelve teams of two, each with a pre-existing relationship, competing in a race around the world to win US$1,000,000. This season visited four continents and nine countries and traveled over 44,000 miles (71,000 km) during thirteen legs. Starting in Los Angeles, racers traveled through Italy, Austria, France, the Netherlands, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Australia, and Hawaii before finishing in Phoenix. The season premiered on CBS on May 29, 2003, and concluded on August 21, 2003.

Married couple Reichen Lehmkuhl and Chip Arndt were the winners of the season, while engaged couple Jon Corso and Kelly Parks finished in second place, and best friends David Dean and Jeff Strand finished in third place.

Production[edit]

Development and filming[edit]

The starting line was on the grounds of Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

The fourth season of The Amazing Race spanned 44,000 miles (71,000 km) across four continents and featured first-time visits to two countries: the Netherlands and South Korea. Filming for the show began on January 18, 2003, and finished on February 14.[1]

Casting[edit]

Casting for this season began in late August 2002.[2]

Cast[edit]

Al Rios
Reichen Lehmkuhl

This season's cast included a gay married couple, NFL wives, a pair of circus clowns, and air traffic controllers. The "NFL Wives", Monica & Sheree, were respectively married to Ashley Ambrose and Ray Buchanan, both of whom played for the Atlanta Falcons the season before the television series was filmed.[3][4] At the time this season was filmed and broadcast, same-sex marriage had not yet been made legal in the United States. Reichen & Chip were never legally married, although they were married in a religious ceremony. CBS decided for the purpose of the show to respect the fact that they recognized themselves as a married couple.[5] Not long after the season ended, Reichen revealed that he and Chip had separated.[6]
