Louisville [ luːivɪl ] is the largest city in the US -amerikanischen State Kentucky and is located on the border with Indiana on the Ohio River . It was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark , who made it in honor of King Louis XVI. named by France because France supported the United States in the War of Independence when it was founded . Louisville is also the seat of the county seat .
population
In 2000 the city had 256,231 inhabitants. In 2003 it was united with Jefferson County to form the Louisville Metro with a population of 741,096 (2010 census). The US Census Bureau still classifies the region into two statistical units, as the population of the Louisville Metro corresponds to the entire Jefferson County.
The statistical region designated by the agency as Louisville / Jefferson County metro government (balance), Kentucky , which excludes 83 parishes in Jefferson County, had a population of 597,337 in 2010. This number is usually used when it comes to the population of Louisville; for example, the US's largest city lists use 597,337 residents rather than the Louisville Metro population .
This supposedly high population growth, which was primarily due to the above-mentioned incorporation of the surrounding area, cannot hide the fact that Louisville has certain similarities with the population development of the large cities of the nearby Rust Belt : Louisville lost almost 35% of its total population between 1960 and 2000 .

Architectural style
In addition to its modern city center, which corresponds to a typical American city center, Louisville has several districts with old buildings and thus, overall, the largest inventory of Victorian villas outside of England. Some of them are on the National Register of Historic Places , such as the Peterson-Dumesnil House .

- On November 21, 2005, the Muhammad Ali Center was opened, in which a permanent exhibition is dedicated to the life and work of the boxer Muhammad Ali .
- There is also a stone fortress from pre-Columbian times near the town .
Economy and Infrastructure
The metropolitan area of Louisville / Jefferson generated a gross domestic product of 75.0 billion US dollars in 2016, making it 46th among the greater metropolitan areas of the United States. The unemployment rate in the metropolitan region was 3.9 percent and was thus slightly above the national average of 3.8 percent (as of March 2018). The personal per capita income in 2016 was 45,525 US dollars, which means that Louisville has a below-average income level.
Louisville's economy initially developed as a shipping and freight industry. Its strategic location on the Ohio Falls , as well as its unique position in the heart of the United States (60% of the continental US can be reached by road in one day) make it an ideal location for cargo handling. The Louisville and Portland Canal and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad are major water and railroad connections. The global hub for UPS Airlines is located at Louisville International Airport . Louisville's location at the junction of three major interstate highways ( I-64 , I-65 and I-71 ) also adds to today's strategic importance for the freight industry. The port of Louisville was the seventh largest inland port in the United States in 2003 .
Recently, Louisville has become a major hub for pharmaceutical and medical science companies. Louisville played a central role in the advancement of cardiac and hand surgery, as well as the treatment of cancer. Some of the first artificial hearts were transplanted in Louisville. Louisville's thriving medical research campus also includes a new $ 88 million rehabilitation center and health research park run in partnership with the University of Louisville and which has attracted nearly 70 high-profile scientists and researchers. Louisville is still home to Humana , one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States.

Regular events
The traditional Kentucky Derby horse race has been held here in May since 1901 .
Since 2007, the Ironman Louisville has been held annually in August in Louisville . In this triathlon over the Ironman distance, the athletes have to swim 3.86 km, cycle 180.2 km, and run 42.195 km.

On April 15, 2008, it was announced that Louisville would be sibling with the city of Bushmills , Northern Ireland . Both places are linked by the tradition of whiskey distilling . The choice fell on Louisville after a search for suitable US cities, a subsequent online survey, in which the public could choose one of the three finalists. The other two finalists were Boston and Portland, Maine .
