Egyptian national soccer team / Olympic Games

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Egyptian national soccer team first took part in the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 , making it the first African team to take part in the soccer tournament. In the first round they lost 2-1 to Italy . Of all African teams, Egypt took part in the finals the most often, but, unlike Cameroon and Nigeria, has not yet won a medal. The best placings are the fourth places in 1928 and 1964, with the United Arab Republic participating in 1964 as well as 1960 , even if this consisted de facto only of Egypt . The senior national team took part until 1988, meeting the senior national teams of the other African countries in the qualifying games, but after 1948 partly on amateur teams in the finals. From 1992 the games were played by the Olympic team.
