The Äußere Stadtring , also called Stadtring West during the planning phase , is a ring road in Dresden . It serves as a south and west bypass of the center of the Saxon state capital as well as an important motorway feeder and connects all federal highways coming into Dresden from the south and west . The outer city ring is not closed, but only approximately a semicircle. It is almost ten kilometers long, has mostly four to six lanes and is completed in Cotta with the exception of a 270 meter long carriageway.

The outer city ring leads with a radius of two to five kilometers around the old market , the historical center of the city. In its south-eastern part, it always runs about one kilometer outside of the 26 ring . Viewed clockwise, it begins in Strehlen at the intersection of Teplitzer Strasse ( State Road 172 , runs from the southeast from Schmilka on the border with the Czech Republic in the Elbe Valley through Saxon Switzerland via Pirna to Dresden) and Caspar-David-Friedrich-Strasse. From there the outer city ring runs in a westerly direction over the Zellescher Weg , where it forms the border between Südvorstadt ( Altstadt II ) in the north and Zschertnitz or Räcknitz in the south. After two kilometers, it crosses the Fritz-Foerster-Platz , on the campus of the Technical University of Dresden , the mountain road ( national highway 170 , leads from the south from Zinnwald on the border with the Czech Republic by the Osterzgebirge via Dippoldiswalde to Dresden).

At Fritz-Foerster-Platz the outer city ring turns to the northwest and is now called Nürnberger Straße . After 300 meters it crosses the Nuremberg court the Münchner Straße . Then it continues over the Nürnberger Ei through the western Südvorstadt and after another kilometer meets Budapester and Chemnitzer Strasse at the next major intersection . From there, the outer city ring is part of the federal highway 173 coming from the direction of Ammonstraße and runs over the approximately 800-meter-long Nossener Bridge . This crosses the one-kilometer-long Löbtau Bridge at the corridor border with Löbtau , which is one of the few elevated roads in Dresden that crosses the Freiberger / Kesselsdorfer Strasse and Löbtauer / Tharandter Strasse and runs in a north-south direction.

Then the ramps of the elevated road lead to the Emerich-Ambros-Ufer , which runs on both banks of the Weißeritz . Shortly afterwards, at the Fröbelstraße intersection , federal highway 173 turns west towards Bramschtunnel / Coventrystraße . It leads via Freiberg , Chemnitz , Zwickau and Hof to Bad Staffelstein . The outer city ring, however, continues in a north-westerly direction over the Emerich-Ambros-Ufer through the south-west Friedrichstadt to the field boundary to Cotta . While the directional lane to the northwest leads directly to the wing path, a 270 meter long section of the opposite lane is missing in this area. The traffic flows from the bridge of the Flügelweg over the Weißeritz along the Tonbergstrasse to Altcotta and from there over the Lübecker Strasse to the Emerich-Ambros-Ufer.

After tunneling under the western end of the Dresden-Friedrichstadt train station , the Flügelweg leads under Hamburger Straße at a non-level crossing ( Bundesstraße 6 , leads from Bremen via Hanover , Leipzig and Meißen to Dresden and from there via Bautzen to Görlitz ). Then the outer city ring runs on the Flügelweg bridge over the Elbe . Its north-western section leads on the right bank of the Elbe over Washingtonstrasse, classified as State Road 73, through Übigau , Mickten and Kaditz . The Äußere Stadtring ends at Elbepark Dresden with the Dresden-Neustadt junction on federal motorway 4 .

As early as the planning period for Washingtonstrasse and Flügelwegbrücke in the late 1920s, considerations existed to integrate them into a western bypass of the city. The Great Depression and World War II meant that this was not completed. Even in the time of the GDR there were plans for a more efficient road connection in what was then the Dresden-West district . The aim was to bridge the confusing traffic junction Kesselsdorfer / Tharandter / Columbus- / Löbtauer Straße, which should be made possible by an extension of the bridge for young people. Construction began in 1989, and the Löbtau Bridge was finally built as the first new construction of what would later be the western bypass, then from 1993 to 1996. This also brought the variant of a new and longer city ring into focus. The traffic concept adopted by the city council in 1994 envisaged creating a western bypass along the current route in order to keep through traffic away from downtown Dresden. For cost reasons, the planning was based on existing road sections such as Nürnberger Strasse, Emerich-Ambros-Ufer and Washingtonstrasse, which should be expanded and connected as directly as possible. In March 1997 the last planning section of this route, the currently unrealized section at Altcotta , passed the city council. The city planning office thus completed the preliminary planning for the western bypass.

In the 1990s, extensive construction work began along the planned route. Among other things, Nürnberger Strasse and Emerich-Ambros-Ufer were expanded, as was the section on the right bank of the river Elbe: In February 1997, construction began on the Washingtonstrasse bridge over the Kaditz flood channel , which had crossed the road for decades. On August 14, 1998, after about a year of construction, the newly built Washingtonstrasse was opened to traffic over the Flutrinnenbrücke to the Elbepark, and in July 2001 the section to the Flügelwegbrücke. In the next step, the wing path bridge built in 1929/30 received a new replacement from 2001 to 2004. The next bottleneck in the south was the junction of Flügelweg / Hamburger Straße. From 2004 to 2006, the Flügelweg was relocated in a tunnel under Hamburger Strasse, connected to it via Dutch ramps , and the intersection was thus partially leveled .

Plans from 2011 envisaged starting in 2013 to close the gap at Altcotta between Flügelweg and Emerich-Ambros-Ufer. Among other things, it was delayed due to changed flood protection requirements in Dresden as a result of the flood of the century in 2002 . However, by the end of 2017, construction had still not started. In addition, the Nossener Bridge, which was built in the early 1960s and is currently the oldest bridge on the outer city ring, is to be replaced by a new building.
