1st Yugoslav Football League 1964/65

The 1st Yugoslav Football League 1965/66 was the 37th season of the highest Yugoslav division in men's football . It began on August 14, 1965 and ended on June 19, 1966.

The FK Vojvodina won the Yugoslav championship for the first time.

Planinić affair

Although the events took place 14 months earlier, the beginning and the subsequent 1965/66 season was marked by a revelation of match fixing from two seasons earlier.

The clubs FK Željezničar Sarajevo , Hajduk Split and NK Trešnjevka Zagreb were affected . On the 25th matchday of the 1963/64 season, Hajduk Split won 4-0 against Željezničar Sarajevo. A week later, a draw between Željezničar Sarajevo and Trešnjevka Zagreb was to be negotiated to save the Zagreb club from relegation. The game actually ended 3: 3.

The goalkeeper of Željezničar, Rank Planinić, plagued his conscience. He confided in a journalist. Planinić made the information public in August 1965. This sparked a nationwide scandal known as the Planinić Affair . There have been rumors of manipulation several times in previous years. However, this was the first time a player had revealed himself.

In a meeting on August 27, 1965, the disciplinary committee of the football association decided to ban the clubs Željezničar, Hajduk and Trešnjevka from the first division. As a result, this decision was reduced and the three clubs deducted points. Željezničar Sarajevo were deducted six points, Hajduk Split and Trešnjevka Zagreb five points each.

Two players from Željezničar received a one-year ban. The board members and coaches of Željezničar Sarajevo and Hajduk Split were banned from performing their functions in football for life.

The 16 teams played against each other twice on a total of 30 match days, divided into a first and a second round. The last two teams were relegated.
