13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi is an American action film from the year 2016 of director Michael Bay . The film is based on the book 13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi by the author Mitchell Zuckoff, which deals with the Islamist attacks on the US consulate in Benghazi , Libya in 2012.
action
The film is thematically about the Benghazi attack . After the civil war in Libya in 2011 , the security situation is unstable. The USA maintains a camouflaged secret service base and is preparing temporary diplomatic accommodation for the short-term visit of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens . There is a large-scale attack by heavily armed Islamists, in which, among other things, the ambassador is killed. A six-man paramilitary Global Response Staff under the command of the Central Intelligence Agency comes to the aid of the Diplomatic Security Service late and withdraws to its base, which is then also targeted by the Islamist attackers. After fierce fighting, the base is finally evacuated.
Cast and dubbing
The film was dubbed by Interopa Film GmbH in Berlin . The dialogue director was Tobias Meister , who also wrote the dialogue book .

reception
The film is classified less as an accurate historical film and more as a generic action film. The political background is not discussed. The special forces' military combat tactics are in the foreground. In the USA, the “Benghazi Affair” is politically explosive. The film started at the beginning of the primaries for the 2016 presidential election . The criticism of the State Department and, indirectly, of the then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the inadequate security measures and the lack of reinforcements is incidental. The causes of the conflict or events such as NATO's participation in a military operation with air forces in 2011 are not discussed. The brutality of the fighting is staged in a contemporary naturalistic way and is not glossed over. The attackers' motives remain unclear and are of no further concern for the protagonists . In the style of a military first person shooter , the attacking waves of anonymous enemies are repelled.
The cost of production was estimated at $ 50 million. The film grossed around $ 69 million in cinemas worldwide, including $ 53 million in the United States.
Awards
The sound engineers were for their work Gary Summers , Jeffrey J. Haboush and Mac Ruth in 2017 for the Oscar in category Sound Best nominated. The production was also nominated for the Satellite Awards 2016 in the field of sound .
