15 Minutes ( 15 Minutes ) is an American action film by John Herzfeld from the year 2001 . The New York police officer Eddie Flemming ( Robert De Niro ) is often invited to talk shows thanks to his spectacular arrests. When two killers film their brutal murders in order to then sell them to the highest bidder station, hoping for wealth and fame, Flemming does everything possible to convict the perpetrators with the help of fire protection expert Jordy Warsaw ( Edward Burns ).

action

Criminals Emil Slovak and Oleg Razgul come to New York City to collect their share of the loot from a bank robbery in Eastern Europe. Oleg steals a video camera shortly after arriving. When the two of them go to their former accomplice to pick up their share of the booty, Oleg films Emil killing the accomplice and his wife because they have spent all the money. Emil then sets a fire in the apartment to cover her tracks.

Eddie Flemming from the police and Jordy Warsaw from the fire department are investigating the case. You get the address of the hairdresser Daphne Handlova from the employee of an escort agency, Rose Hearn, who witnessed the double murder but managed to escape the perpetrators. However, Emil and Oleg had already been to the hairdresser's beforehand to intimidate them. Emil, who observed the police officers' conversation with the woman, then came into possession of Flemming's business card during a chase with the police. He becomes jealous that the cop, who works closely with the media, has achieved a certain fame.

Emil and Oleg break into Flemming's. They overpower the policeman and explain to him that they want to kill him on camera. They want to plead insanity later and sell the book and film rights. Flemming dies after a fight. Emil sells the tape to a television presenter for $ 1 million.

After an argument between Emil and Oleg while the video was being broadcast on television, Warsaw succeeds in arresting Emil. Oleg can escape with the camera and the video recordings.

With the help of a star lawyer, Emil later convinced the court that he was insane for his actions due to his unstable psyche and the strong pressure from his accomplice. The real culprit is Oleg Razgul. During the transfer to the mental institution, Oleg suddenly reappears and hands over a video recording to reporter Robert Hawkins that shows Emil Flemming explaining his plan shortly before he was murdered. The tape proves that Emil was not insane and had planned everything exactly that way.

Oleg then shoots Emil, who is able to take a pistol in the chaos and shoots his former accomplice. He takes the reporter Nicolette Karas, who was Eddie Flemming's girlfriend, hostage, but is then shot by Jordy Warsaw.

At the end of the film, Oleg says a few words into the camera before he dies.

Reviews

Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times on March 9, 2001 that the film was ambitious and provocative. However, it is too long, not always meaningful and contains too much violence. The statements in the film about the link between media coverage and crime cannot be ignored. Turan wrote that the camerawork and editing were essential to the effect of the film. He also praised the portrayals of Karel Roden and Oleg Taktarov.

Desson Howe praised the portrayals of Robert De Niro, Edward Burns, Karel Roden and Oleg Taktarov in the Washington Post on March 9, 2001. The central theme of the film is to get famous at all costs. Some elements of the film would look like second hand.

The lexicon of international films judged: “An overly harsh thriller whose alleged media criticism reveals itself to be a mendacious attitude at the latest when it uses precisely the stylistic devices that it claims to denounce. Apart from the deficiencies in the production, it was also disappointing in terms of acting. "

Awards

The film was nominated for the Taurus Award in 2002.
