Class by class

Class orchestra and choir

There are two class orchestras and one class choir per year, made up of the students from the respective classes.

Cross-class

There are twelve other cross-class music groups at the ASG:

Choirs

  • Year choirs for grades 5; 6; 7/8
  • School choir from grade 9

Chamber choir

The Albert Schweitzer Chamber Choir (also called ASK) was founded in 2000 by its director Walter Bially. The approximately 30 members of this choir are students (including former ones), teachers and parents of the Albert Schweitzer Gymnasium, supplemented by some singers who have no direct connection to the school. Almost all of the choir members are amateur singers, but many of them receive regular singing lessons. The choir's repertoire includes demanding choral literature from the 16th century to the present day, a cappella works as well as cantatas and oratorios. The ASK works on a project basis, ie a new concert program is usually developed twice a year in a short, intensive rehearsal phase. In addition to concerts in Hamburg and the surrounding area, the choir regularly conducts concert tours in Germany and abroad.

orchestra

  • School orchestra
  • A strings
  • A-horn players

Albert Schweitzer Youth Orchestra

In cooperation with other schools there is the Albert Schweitzer Youth Orchestra, also called ASJ. More than 40 orchestra members are state or federal award winners in the “Jugend musiziert” competition. The ASJ is a full symphony orchestra with around 65 members aged 14 to 25 years. The average age is around 17 years. The ASJ gives concerts twice a year in the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg. The solo tasks are usually entrusted to ASJ members or former members - mostly federal prize winners from “Jugend musiziert”.

Junior band

The junior band is aimed primarily at junior middle school students who play a typical big band instrument. The line-up is, however, very flexible and open to almost all instruments, because it is about making first experiences in “groovy” interplay and learning basic musical expressions. The focus of the rehearsal work is on the precise and authentic implementation of the arrangements and the development of the soloistic possibilities during improvisation.

Big Band

The Big Band offers already experienced students the opportunity to implement more complex arrangements and to expand their improvisation experience with the basis of music theory. The line-up of the big band is based on the classic models with saxophones, trumpets and trombones, which make up the wind section, and the rhythm section, consisting of guitar, bass, piano and drums. But here, too, the line-up is repeatedly opened up to other instruments, because especially at the ASG it is appealing to hear classical instruments that are atypical in jazz and thus to exceed the style boundaries.
