The Altausseer See (also Altausseersee ) is an alpine lake in the Styrian Salzkammergut in Austria . It is located in the Altaussee nature reserve .

geography

The lake is surrounded by the foothills of the Dead Mountains to the north and east . Altaussee is located directly on the west bank . The catchment area of the lake is 54 km² and lies entirely in the Dead Mountains. It is drained by the Altausseer Traun , one of the three source rivers of the Traun .

The banks of the Altausseer See are practically unobstructed. A delightful promenade, which often reveals views of the Dead Mountains and the Dachstein massif , leads around the lake.

particularities

The Altausseer See is a dimictic lake . In spring, after the ice melts, the entire body of water (first myxis) mixes and brings oxygen-rich water to great depths. In the summer months, extremely pronounced thermoclines form , which are not destroyed by the typical thermal summer winds. The heated surface layer ( epilimnion ) lies on top of the thick, less oxygenated base layer ( hypolimnion ). In autumn, when the water cools down again, the phase of the second myxis (mixing) begins, which - after a largely uniform temperature of approx. 4 ° C has been reached - is followed by ice formation on the water surface, which continues to cool. In the lake there are mainly oxygen-requiring fish species such as arctic char and lake trout , which prefer such conditions.

On May 7, 2011, the Altaussee , Austria's first solar-electric powered catamaran, went into operation on the lake. Stern & Hafferl operates the ship for 80 passengers and since 2018 - including the skipper - a traditional wooden platform for 12 people and propulsion by rudder or electric motor. Felix Suchanek has been building wooden platters and electric boats for a long time, which you can rent yourself at the lake.

On the Seewiese, an inn from the 1960s - with a residential unit - was reactivated in May 2018. The buildings were rebuilt from wood in the local style - on a concrete-stone foundation - including the dance floor, the storage rooms from natural stone. The inn is halfway along the 7.4 km long riverside walk . It can be easily reached by ship via a footbridge and is car-free in the nature reserve.

For the 9-day daffodil festival in May / June there is a boat parade of sculptures covered with flowers every second year (alternating with the Grundlsee) on the Altausseersee.

Parts of the James Bond film Specter were filmed at the lake in 2015. The Seewiese hunting lodge in particular is shown in the film. The lake is also named in the film.

Tributaries

There are no notable above-ground tributaries. The lake is mainly fed by subterranean tributaries from crevice systems in the limestone of the Dead Mountains. At the end of the lake is the Ostersee , a groundwater lacquer with a few small tributaries.

Originally the Augstbach flowed 250 m north of the lake outflow into the Altausseer See. However, the creek bed was artificially relocated before 1530, so that the Augstbach now flows west of the Altausseer See and only flows into the Traun 150 m below the lake outflow.
