Career

Anders Johnson began his professional career in the Continental Cup in the 2001/02 season . On January 26th, 2002 he took part in a jumping of this series for the first time and reached 21st place on the large hill. At the Junior World Championships in 2003 in Sollefteå , Sweden , he reached 44th place in individual jumping on the normal hill and 14th in team competition together with Evan Bliss , Blake Hughes and Chris Francis , and thus penultimate place before Switzerland. After further competitions in the Continental Cup, he started again in 2005 at the Junior World Championships in Stryn , Norway , where he achieved 52nd place in individual competitions and 12th place in team competitions. In the following years, Johnson could not qualify for the senior national team and thus still only jumped in the Continental Cup. At the Junior World Championships in 2005 in Rovaniemi , Finland , he was able to improve his result from 2003 and reached 35th place in the individual competition and 11th place in the team competition together with Michael Glasder , Nicholas Fairall and Keate Skyler . At the Junior World Championships 2006 in Kranj , Slovenia , Johnson only jumped in individual jumping and reached 37th place there, but was still nominated for the team of the United States for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin . At the team competition there on February 20, 2006, he and the team together with Thomas Schwall , Clint Jones and Alan Alborn reached 14th place. At 17, Johnson was the youngest US ski jumper ever to be nominated for an Olympic tournament and the second youngest US athlete ever nominated. Even after the Olympic Games, Johnson was unable to make it into the senior national team and therefore jumped a few FIS Cup competitions before taking part in the Continental Cup again. On September 2, 2006 he reached the FIS Cup in Örnsköldsvik , Sweden for the first time a podium place and reached the 3rd place. At the Junior World Championships 2007 in Tarvisio , Italy , he was again unable to convince with 43rd place in the individual competition and 14th place in the team competition. At the FIS Cup on September 1, 2007 in Oberwiesenthal , he was able to repeat his result from the previous year. At the Junior World Championships 2008 in Zakopane , Poland , he was able to achieve a TOP20 placement for the first time with 17th place. With the team he ended up in 8th place. On March 15, 2008, he was able to win the US championships in Lake Placid . After another season in the Continental Cup and jumping at the Summer Grand Prix, he jumped for the first time on December 28, 2008 in the qualification for the opening competition of the Four Hills Tournament 2008/09 in Oberstdorf in the senior national team for the United States. However, he could not qualify in the first three competitions. It was not until January 5th, 2009 that he made the jump into the competition in the jumping in Bischofshofen with 44th place in the qualification, which he finished 50th and last. More World Cup competitions followed in Tauplitz and Vancouver . With the 29th place in the second competition on the large hill in Vancouver on January 25th, 2009 he achieved his best result so far in the World Cup. Despite this result, he has been jumping again in the FIS and Continental Cup since then. At the Junior World Championships 2009 in Štrbské Pleso , Slovakia , he was able to achieve his best result so far at a Junior World Championship with 16th place in the individual competition. In 2009 he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec for the first time and reached 48th place on the normal hill and 40th on the large hill.

At the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , Johnson was eliminated in 49th place in jumping on the normal hill after the first round. In qualifying on the large hill, he was 42nd and failed to qualify for the final.

After the Olympic Games, he did not appear in any other international jumping competitions in the 2009/10 season. It wasn't until September that he started again in the Continental Cup, but ended up only in the back places in Lillehammer and Oslo. Then he started in Falun in the FIS Cup and achieved two good fourth places there. The 2010/11 Continental Cup season began without success for Johnson. Only in the Alpensia Jumping Park in Pyeongchang , South Korea , was he able to win another point with 30th place on January 13th. A month later he surprisingly reached seventh place in the jumping at Iron Mountain in his home country . At the end of the season he managed again a 29th place in Wisła . He then ended the season in 84th place in the overall Continental Cup ranking, which was his best result to date.

In the summer of 2011, sch Johnson tried unsuccessfully in the Ski Jumping Grand Prix and the Continental Cup. He was only able to achieve good placements in team competitions and individual competitions in the FIS Cup. He competed in the 2011/12 Continental Cup season from December 2011 to February 2012 without success and only achieved lower places. Only in Iron Mountain did he win points again. At the FIS Cup show jumping in Brattleboro , which took place shortly afterwards , he was able to win both competitions. At the end of the season, Johnson was nominated again for a World Cup competition, but missed the individual qualification in ski flying in Planica and did not get past 11th place in team flying either. He started the summer jumping competitions in 2012 successfully with two good placements in Stams . After rather mixed results in a row, he was able to achieve two 27th places at the first Grand Prix jumping in Almaty . In Hinzenbach and Klingenthal , however, he again clearly missed the qualification and had to line up with only eight points in 72nd place in the overall Grand Prix standings.

He started the 2012/13 World Cup season with the team in Lillehammer with a surprising fifth place. In the following individual competitions, however, he got stuck in the qualification without success. It was not until January 4, 2013 that he made it in Innsbruck and was able to achieve 46th place. As in this jumping, he was also unsuccessful in the following World Cups.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , Johnson was part of the US team and reached 37th place in the individual on the normal hill, before he was in the mixed team competition due to the good performance of Jessica Jerome , Peter Frenette and individual world champion Sarah Hendrickson reached sixth place. In the individual on the large hill, he again had no chance with 39th place. No American team was set up for the team competition on the large hill.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , Johnson retired in 47th place in jumping on the normal hill after the first round. Together with Peter Frenette, Nicholas Fairall and Nicholas Alexander , he took tenth place in the team competition .

His last participation in a competition organized by the FIS was on March 19, 2015 in ski flying in Planica , when he failed to qualify with 49th place. Nevertheless, he achieved his personal best of 179.0 m at Letalnica . After Johnson announced that he would only suspend the 2015/16 season, he did not participate in international competitions in the following seasons.
