André 3000 (born May 27, 1975 in Atlanta , Georgia ; real name André Lauren Benjamin ) is an American rapper and actor . He is a member of the hip-hop group OutKast and the Dirty South collective Dungeon Family .

André 3000 is particularly noticeable for his extravagant clothing style, which in 2004 earned him an award as “Best Dressed Man in the World”. As a self- confessed vegan , he was voted “Sexiest Vegetarian Alive” by the animal rights organization PETA alongside Alicia Silverstone in the same year . In a 2008 list of the “50 Greatest MCs of Our Time”, chosen by About.com, André 3000 ranks 13th.

His pseudonyms include Possum Jenkins, Dookie Blossumgame III, Benjamin André and Johnny Vulture. Until the publication of Aquemini , he simply called himself Dre instead of André 3000.

Career

André 3000 was raised by his single mother in Atlanta. During his school days he met his later bandmate Big Boi . In 1994 the two released their first album and from then on they were always highly praised by the critics. Each of their albums received at least one platinum record , so far they have won six Grammys .

Together with the singer Erykah Badu , André 3000 has a son born in 1997. One of OutKast's biggest hits, Ms. Jackson , addresses his failed relationship with Badu. On the 2003 published double album Speakerboxxx / The Love Below , half of André 3000 was almost entirely written and produced by himself. His album, The Love Below , received more media attention, the single hits Hey Ya! and Roses come from this part of the double album. Speakerboxxx / The Love Below was named one of the most important works of the year by all major German music magazines and is one of the world's most successful albums of this decade. In March 2004, André 3000 gave the laudatory speech with Big Boi and Alicia Keys for Prince when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

Since 2005 he has been increasingly appearing as an actor, including in Be Cool - Everyone is looking for the next big hit alongside John Travolta and Uma Thurman and in Four Brothers alongside Mark Wahlberg . Together with Big Boi, he plays his first leading role in the musical film Idlewild . From 2006 to 2008 he set music to the main character in the Emmy- winning animated film series Class of 3000 , of which he was the inventor and executive producer . In 2008 he starred opposite Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson in the sports comedy Semi-Pro . His film role parodies his penchant for fancy pseudonyms. This is how his character, who is actually called Clarence, is also called Downtown Funkystuff Malone , Jumping Johnny Johnson , Sugar Ray Dunkerton and Coffee Black in the course of the film .

After the release of Idlewild , André 3000 devoted himself to rapping again and could be heard on songs by UGK and Devin the Dude , as well as remixes by Jay-Z and Rich Boy . Despite the lack of his own single, let alone a mixtape or album, he was voted number 4 by MTV in 2007 and number 9 in their list of “Hottest MCs in the Game” in 2008.

In 2008 he launched his own clothing line.

In 2013 he took on the lead role in the movie All Is By My Side and plays Jimi Hendrix . The director was John Ridley .

Private

André 3000 lived for a time in a relationship with the singer Erykah Badu , with whom he has a son (born December 6, 1997).
